DePaul Falls to St. John's

CHICAGO - The DePaul volleyball team dropped a 3-1 BIG EAST Conference match to St. John's on Saturday at McGrath-Phillips Arena. The Blue Demons fall to 13-14 on the year and are 7-8 in league games. St. John's improves to 15-14 and are 6-10 in conference games.
Caitlyn Coffey led the Blue Demon attack with 12 kills and an impressive .407 attack percentage. She also added four block assists. Colleen Smith guided DePaul's offensive efforts with 37 assists while she also added six digs and a kill.
St. John's raced out to a 15-5 lead in the opening set behind four kills from Gaia Traballi and three from Hanna Wagner. Down, by 10, DePaul called a timeout and went on a 10-6 run and pulled within six (21-15) on a kill by Coffey. St. John's closed out the set on a 4-1 run and took the set 25-16.
The second set played closer as there were six ties. With the set tied at 10, the Red Storm went on an 8-3 run which provided some separation. St. John's closed out the set on a 7-3 run and went up 2-0 heading into the break.
In the third set, DePaul was explosive at the net and recorded six blocks -- including two solo blocks from Jasmine King -- which sent the match into a fourth set.
Down 17-10 in the third, the Blue Demon comeback was fueled by 10 St. John's errors. Tied at 22, a St. John's attack error would give DePaul its first lead of the set. The Blue Demons got a huge block from Coffey and King which gave the Blue Demons set point. King put an exclamation point on the set with a huge kill to give the Blue Demons the 25-23, set victory.
St. John's led the fourth set from the opening point. The Red Storm won the final set 25-17.
St. John's was led by Traballi's 20 kills. She also added six digs and two blocks. Erica DiMaulo dished out 47 assists.
DePaul is back in action on Sunday against Seton Hall. The Blue Demons will celebrate Senior Day and the careers of Lexi Chanos, King and Smith at the conclusion of the match.
