Volleyball Falls at Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis.- The DePaul volleyball team dropped a three-set match (25-21, 25-20, 25-17) at Marquette on Saturday. The Blue Demons fall to 13-13 and are 7-7 in BIG EAST Conference play. Marquette improves to 21-5 and is 11-3 in BIG EAST matches.
Claire Anderson and Caitlyn Coffey lead the Blue Demons attack with eight kills apiece. Anderson finished with seven digs and a block.
Colleen Smith finished with 24 assists and four digs. Smith added two service aces.
Haley Bueser led the Blue Demons defense with a game-high 12 digs.
Back-and-forth action characterized the first set. There were 14 lead changes and eight ties with neither team leading by more than two points until a Marquette took a 20-17 advantage. Caitlyn Coffey paced the Blue Demons early with three kills for DePaul's first four points.
A service ace by Lexi Chanos and Anderson's third kill of the set knotted the score at 15. A Marquette block and Taylor Louis kill brought the Marquette lead to 19-17 which forced a Blue Demon timeout. Marquette rallied off three straight points DePaul answered with three of its own points and pulled within two at 23-21. Marquette scored the next two points to take the set.
The Blue Demons ran out to a 5-2 lead early in the second. The Golden Eagles answered with a 5-1 run of their own before the Blue Demons evened the set at seven. Tied at 13 Marquette scored three straight which forced a Blue Demon timeout. A Coffey kill and Marquette hitting error pulled DePaul within one (16-15) of the timeout but the Golden Eagles would end the set on a 9-5 run.
Both sides traded points early to start the third set. With Marquette up 12-10, the Golden Eagles went on a 4-1 run and went up 16-11. The Blue Demons scored five of the next six points, but Marquette closed out the match on an 8-1 run.
The Blue Demons return to action next weekend for a pair of BIG EAST contests to close out their home slate. DePaul hosts St. John's on Saturday at Noon, followed by a match with Seton Hall on Sunday also at Noon.
