CHICAGO - As the 2016 calendar moves to December, the DePaul track & field teams prepare for their first meet of the 2016-17 indoor season at the Notre Dame Blue & Gold Invitational on Friday, Dec. 2. The first event (men's long jump) at the South Bend, Ind. meet is set to start at 3:30 p.m. CT.
The Blue & Gold Invitational features six teams, including fellow BIG EAST school Marquette. DePaul also competes against student-athletes from Bethel, Detroit Mercy, Notre Dame and Valparaiso.
Friday's events feature six 2016 BIG EAST champions on the men's side. Trevor Kintyhtt, three-time conference champion in 2016, returns for his senior year with the Blue Demons and is joined by fellow men's throwers Will Hauser, Kyle Hedge, Isaac Jimenez and Dominic Marshall.
Senior Shayna Nwokenkwo leads the women's sprinting group heading into her final season with the Blue Demons. She kicks off her season with fellow sprinters Simone Carr, Laura Edwards, Gabrielle Howard, Sydnee Matthew and Jessica Watkins.
The Blue Demons are well-represented in the sprinting events with five men's runners. Freshmen sprinters Adam Nelson and Joshua Pearson make their collegiate debuts for DePaul on Friday.
Sophomores Ariel Davis and Alexia Harvey had breakout years for the Blue Demons last season, adding their names to the DePaul record books. Davis broke a 28-year old school record in the 60-meter hurdles at the Blue & Gold Invitational last year and tied for first in the event.
Other freshmen on the men's side making their collegiate debuts are Babajide Bamgbose, Scott Jonske and Xavier Taylor. For the women's team, a total of seven newcomers make their DePaul debuts. Rebecca Chouinard, Kaitlen Crawford, Dylan Marshall and Kelsey Oliva are set for their collegiate debuts on Friday, while Morgan Maize (former DePaul softball standout), Matthew and Jade Nolan make their DePaul track & field debuts.
