Softball Travels to Vegas for the Rebel Classic

CHICAGO -- The DePaul softball team heads to Las Vegas this week for the Rebel Classic Mar. 10-12 at the Eller Media Stadium.
Competition for DePaul (3-12) begins with its first night game of the season on Thursday, Mar. 10 at 8 p.m. CT against UNLV. On Friday, Mar. 11 at 11 a.m., DePaul faces Utah State followed by Valparaiso at 1:15 p.m. CT. The Blue Demons wrap up their time at the Classic on Saturday, Mar. 12 against Utah State at 11 a.m. and Santa Clara at 1:15 p.m. CT.
The University of Wisconsin is also competing at the tournament, but is not taking on DePaul. The Badgers are coached by former DePaul softball star and assistant coach, Yvette Healy. The Classic goes until Sunday, Mar. 13, but the Blue Demons are not scheduled to play that day.
DePaul heads to Sin City after finishing 1-4 at the Easton Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. last weekend. The Blue Demons sole win at the tournament came on Mar. 5 when they defeated Louisiana-Monroe 8-0 in five innings. DePaul's eight runs that game is the most the team has scored in a single game all season.
This is the fifth year in a row DePaul travels to Las Vegas for competition. Over the last four years, the Blue Demons have accumulated an overall 15-9 record at their Vegas tournaments. Going into action this weekend, DePaul holds an overall 56-4 record over the teams it is set to face.

UNLV (10-10) Scout: The Rebels enter the competition after going 2-2 at the UNLV Classic last weekend. Freshman Alyssa Batastini was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week after her performance where she allowed only nine hits, four walks and two unearned runs with four strikeouts over the course of 14.2 innings.
This is the 13th meeting between DePaul and the Rebels. UNLV holds a 9-3 series advantage over the Blue Demons. Last year, UNLV bested DePaul 12-4 in five innings, extending a two game winning streak over the Blue Demons.
Utah State (6-8) Scout: The Aggies went 1-2 last weekend at the Highlander Classic in Riverside, Calif. Utah State is on a one game winning streak after besting Santa Clara 5-1 at the Classic. Four Utah State players have started and played in all 14 games this season. Sarah Chow leads the team with a .381 average as a result of 16 hits for 42 at bats.

Valparaiso (1-12) Scout: The Crusaders went 1-3 at the Spartan Invitational last weekend in Spartanburg, S.C. Valpo's 4-2 win over Presbyterian at the Invite marked its first victory of the season. Taylor Nadler was named to the All-Tournament team after hitting .455 with four runs scored and four RBIs over the course of four games. Overall, Nadler holds a .250 batting average.
Valparaiso is one of DePaul's oldest opponents. This weekend marks the 44th meeting between the two teams. DePaul has won all 43 previous games, the last one being in 2006 when the Blue Demons walked away with a 8-2 victory.
Santa Clara (5-13) Scout: The Broncos went 1-3 at the Highlander Classic in Riverside, Calif. last weekend. Over the course of 18 games, Santa Clara has scored 57 runs and register a .232 batting average as a team. Casandra Padilla leads the team 18 hits, two home runs and 13 RBIs.
DePaul and Santa Clara have met once back in 2008. DePaul beat the Broncos 6-0 and look to improve to a 2-0 series record over the team.
