CHICAGO - Two weeks remain in the outdoor track and field season before the BIG EAST Championships as DePaul track and field splits time between the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa and Crusader Open in Valparaiso, Ind. this weekend.
This weekend, the Blue Demons send representatives to the Drake Relays to cover Thursday, April 28 through Saturday, April 30 and eight runners to compete at the Crusader Open on Saturday, April 30.
Relay runners will be busy in Des Moines, Iowa as the Blue Demons are scheduled to run in six different relay events. For the men, DePaul makes appearances in the 4x1600, 4x400, 1600 sprint medley and distance medley relays. On the women's side, the Blue Demons race in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Individual events begin on Friday for DePaul with Brian Mada in the men's triple jump, Tayler Whittler in the women's 100m dash and Sarah Moss in the women's discus throw.
Mada has surpassed 15 meters in each of his three appearances this season with his best mark of 15.25 meters set at the 49er Classic.
Moss throws in the discus throw for the sixth time this season on Friday. The senior has finished third or better in the event this season and has a season-best throw of 49.46 meters.
Whittler broke the DePaul record for both the 100m and 200m dashes this year. She ranks in the top-100 sprinters in the West region for both events.
Trevor Kintyhtt throws in both the men's discus and hammer throws on Saturday and is joined by teammate Blake Thompson in the discus event. Kintyhtt has thrown above 55 meters for the hammer in two straight meets, including a season-best mark of 58.32 meters at the DePaul Invitational (4/16). Thompson hit a top season mark in the discus last weekend at the ISU Pacesetter Invite (4/23) when he reached 52.25 meters.
Katerina Cirone and Courtney Tedeschi represent DePaul in the women's 3000m steeplechase on Saturday. Tough competition in the event has both runners looking to crack the 11-minute mark for the first time this year. Tedeschi has a team-best time of 11:00.61 in the event.
DePaul makes appearances in four different events at the Crusader Open. Four women's runners race in the 800m. The group contains Lauren Sharp, Christine Mujica, Miranda Rea and Nora Smith.
The Blue Demons send three student-athletes to participate between the men's and women's 1500m events. Caroline Kurdej and Paige Skorseth are set to compete on the women's side, while Daniel Peterson is the lone men's runner.
Steve McEvilly rounds out the DePaul participants by running in the men's 5000m. The junior set his personal best in the event at the Chicagoland Championships with a time of 16:56.86.
