Softball Takes Game One 8-3 Over Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The DePaul softball team defeated Seton Hall 8-3 in game one Saturday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field.
With the score tied 3-3 heading into the sixth, DePaul (22-24, 12-3 BIG EAST) tacked on four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to secure the win.
Seton Hall (24-26, 7-8 BIG EAST) got on board first with a run in the bottom of the second.
The Blue Demons responded with a run in the third and two in the fourth to pull ahead 3-1.
In the third with Morgan Maize in scoring position and Naomi Tellez on first, Sabrina Kuchta notched a fly out to left field allowing Maize to steal home for an unearned run.
In the fourth with Angela Scalzitti on second, the sophomore recorded DePaul's second run off a Pirates' throwing error as batter Micah Fitzgerald reached first.
DePaul went on to load the bases with Fitzgerald on third, pinch runner Cherelle Chambers on second and Maize on first. Fitzgerald scored the Blue Demons third run off a Pirates fielder's choice.
Seton Hall tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth off a two-run homer.
In the sixth, Maize responded with a three-run homer of her own. With Dylan Christensen and Micah Fitzgerald on base, Maize's ninth homer of the season put DePaul back in the lead with a 6-3 score.
DePaul loaded the bases following the homer with Alysia Rodriguez on first, Kuchta on second and pinch runner Marsha' Pendilton on third. With Scalzitti at the plate, the sophomore reached base on a fielder's choice as Pendilton scored the Blue Demons' seventh run.
DePaul's final run of the game came in the seventh. With two outs, Maize doubled to left field. The senior advanced to third off a single from Nicole Pihl and then scored off a Seton Hall error.
Maize (17-14) pitched a complete game for DePaul. She allowed 10 hits, three runs and struck out seven.
Chrisa Head (7-8) suffered the loss for Seton Hall. She pitched for five and one-third innings, allowed six hits, seven runs and struck out two. Madison Strunk pitched for one and two-thirds innings. She allowed two hits and one run.
DePaul is back at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field this afternoon for game two of the doubleheader against the Pirates.
