CHICAGO - The outdoor track and field season for DePaul comes down to this weekend as three student-athletes head to Lawrence, Kan. to take part in the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships West Preliminaries. Events begin on Thursday, May 26 and run until Saturday, May 28.
DePaul sends three student-athletes to the prelims to compete in four different events. Tayler Whittler is set to race in both the women's 100m and 200m. In the men's 800m, Jeffrey Sattler represents the Blue Demons. Brian Mada makes his NCAA debut in the men's triple jump.
Whittler and Sattler are in action on Thursday with first round action in their respective events. Whittler starts the meet for DePaul in the women's 100m at 6:30 p.m. CT. The senior is in the sixth and final heat of the group. Sattler sits in the final heat of the men's 800m. The event is scheduled for an 8:35 p.m. CT start.
For Whittler or Sattler to qualify for Friday's quarterfinals, they must finish in the top three of their respective heats or record a top-six overall time in the event after the automatic qualifiers are determined.
On the Friday, Whittler sprints in the first round of the women's 200m at 8 p.m. CT and is set in the final heat. The women's 200m follows the same qualifying structure as the women's 100m and men's 800m and the quarterfinals are scheduled for Saturday.
Mada waits until the final day to jump at the regional with the men's triple jump scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday. The freshman participates in the second of four flights and must finish in the top 12 to qualify for the NCAA National Championship.
