EDMONTON, Alberta - Following a first-place performance in the men's shot put at the Canadian Olympic Trials, DePaul track and field alum Tim Nedow (2009-12) qualified to compete for Team Canada at the Rio Olympics. Nedow is the first thrower in DePaul program history to qualify for the Olympic Games.
Nedow, a second team All-American in both the shot put and discus throw, came into Sunday's men's shot put senior final as the event favorite. The former Blue Demon opened with a throw of 19.18 meters and followed with his best attempt of the afternoon at 20.28 meters. That mark would solidify Nedow's event victory and qualified him for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
"We're all really proud of Tim and of the progress he has made both here at DePaul and in the past few years to prepare for this moment," said DePaul track and field assistant coach Brandon Murer. "He's been training hard and we are all excited to see him compete on the national stage."
As a Blue Demon, Nedow was a three-time member on the BIG EAST All-Academic Team (2010-12) and two-time member on the USTFCCCA D-I All-Academic Team (2011-12). Nedow, DePaul's program record holder for both the indoor and outdoor shot put events, won four BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Championships in his three seasons at DePaul. He won back-to-back indoor shot put titles in 2011 and 2012.
The men's shot put at the Rio Olympics is set to take place on Thursday, August 18.
