Event Wins Highlight Illini Classic for Blue Demons

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - In the first indoor track & field meet of 2017, DePaul took home two event wins and even more top-five finishes at the Illini Classic Saturday.
Trevor Kintyhtt won his second weight throw event of the indoor season when the senior reached 20.06 meters on his fourth attempt. Kintyhtt defeated 22 other throwers to remain perfect in the event this season.
Brian Mada earned the other Blue Demon victory on the day in the men's triple jump. Making his season debut, Mada jumped to 14.63 meters on his third attempt and held the top position for the rest of the three attempts.
Jade Nolan recorded the best finish of the day on the women's side by placing second in the long jump. Nolan hit 5.68 meters in her first jump and missed first place by .02 meters. The sophomore bested 19 other jumpers in the event.
In the men's 60m hurdles, Evan Lowry finished second in his preliminary heat to qualify for the final with a time of 8.47, a new personal best. Lowry crossed the finish line at 8.55 in the final to earn fourth overall.
Throwers Emily Eller and Corinne Franz both surpassed the 13-meter mark in the women's shot put to grab top-six finishes. Eller had the top Blue Demon distance of 13.65 meters for fifth overall. Franz was one spot behind at 13.44 meters, matching her personal best.
Gabrielle Howard placed fifth in the women's triple jump with a distance of 10.97 meters. Howard reached her best mark on her final attempt.
The distance duo of Jeremy Lozano and Alex Campanella posted better times than 20 other runners to claim fifth and sixth, respectively, in the men's 3000m run. Lozano ran a personal best time of 8:35.50 in his season debut, while Campanella finished right behind at 8:35.58.
Ariel Davis took second place in heat two of the women's 60m hurdle preliminaries and qualified for the final with a time of 8.80. In the final, Davis bested her prelim time by finishing at 8.76 and placed sixth overall.
Scott Arsenault competed in the fastest heat of the afternoon in the men's 600m. Arsenault, competing in the event for the first time in his collegiate career, took fifth overall with a time of 1:21.90.
Caroline Muller was one of just seven student-athletes to clear 1.61 meters in the women's high jump and cleared it on her first attempt. With the bar set at 1.66 meters, Muller missed clearing the height to finish tied for sixth out of 17 total competitors.
In the final team standings, the men finished fourth with 46 points and defeated Eastern Illinois (45 points), Bradley (35), Saint Louis (24) and fellow BIG EAST member Butler (19). On the women's side, DePaul earned 25.50 points for eighth overall. The Blue Demon women beat Saint Louis (19 points), Northwestern (17), Bradley (10) and Butler (10).
The Blue Demons have a week to prepare before heading to the Notre Dame Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 21. The Notre Dame Invitational marks the second of four trips to South Bend, Ind. for DePaul in the indoor season.
