SOUTH BEND, Ind. - An event win by Sebastian Feyersinger, a broken school record from Trevor Kintyhtt and 11 top-five finishes highlighted Saturday's Notre Dame Invitational for the DePaul track & field teams.
Feyersinger won the men's 200m dash, his first of the season, and crossed the finish line at 21.71. The junior had a .14 second advantage over second place. Isaac Walker (22.33) and Chaz Bottoms (22.41) took fifth and sixth in the event, respectively.
Shayna Nwokenkwo qualified for the women's 60m dash after posting the fourth-best time in the prelims at 7.67. She was joined by teammate Jessica Watkins who just made the cut in eighth. In the final, Nwokenkwo and Watkins were side-by-side at the finish line. Nwokenkwo claimed fourth with a time of 7.62 and Watkins earned fifth at 7.63, a personal best.
"Today was the type of meet we needed to test this team's competitive ability," said head coach Dave Dopek. "It was a high caliber meet that required us to step up."
Kintyhtt earned a runner-up finish in the men's weight throw by hitting a new school record of 21.05 meters. Kintyhtt broke a 15-year old record set by Carey Ryan (20.83m). The senior was less than a meter off of the top finisher in the event, but now sits ninth nationally in the event.
Emily Eller grabbed a fifth-place finish in the women's shot put when she hit a mark of 14.34 meters. That distance is a personal record for the sophomore and is the second-best throw in the BIG EAST this year.
Feyersinger also placed fourth in the men's 400m with a time of 48.30. Mac Melto followed shortly behind in sixth at 48.56.
Caroline Muller had a top-five finish in the women's high jump with a jump of 1.59 meters. Saturday marked the third time this season that Muller finished sixth or better in the event.
"There is plenty of work to do, but all signs point to us moving in the right direction," stated Dopek.
Scott Arsenault finished with a time of 1:51.81 in the men's 800m event to take fourth place. That time broke Arsenault's previous personal record.
Sophomore Laura Edwards set a personal record in the 400m by finishing at 57.30 to take eighth overall. Her previous personal best in the event was 59.97.
In just his second meet of the season Brian Mada claimed third in the men's triple jump with a mark of 14.86m. Mada reached a new season high with that distance.
The Blue Demons have their first two-day meet of the season up next with the Indiana Relays on Jan. 27 and 28.
