Blue Demons Drop Road Game at St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y. - Looking to pick up a road win on the back end of a two-game trip, DePaul came up short in a 78-68 decision at St. John's on Monday afternoon. Tre'Darius McCallum recorded a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double to lead the Blue Demons.
St. John's held a nine-point lead midway through the first half at 23-14 before the Blue Demons score 15 of the game's next 21 points. A three by Brandon Cyrus knotted the score at 29-29 with 4:51 left before halftime.
However that was the last bucket of the half for DePaul as the Blue Demons went scoreless over the remainder of the opening and St. John's reeled off 11 straight points to take a 40-29 lead at intermission.
DePaul (8-11, 1-5 BIG EAST) closed to within seven points six minutes into the second half, but could get no closer over the remainder of the game. The Blue Demons moved to within seven three more times, but St. John's was able to hold off DePaul on each occasion.
Billy Garrett Jr. led DePaul with 16 points and four assists while Eli Cain finished with 15 points, six assists and five rebounds. Joe Hanel added a career-high 12 points along with five boards. In addition to his 14 points and 10 rebounds, McCallum also totaled two blocked shots and two steals.
St. John's (9-11, 3-4 BIG EAST) was led by 23 points from Malik Ellison and 14 each from Bashir Ahmed and Shamorie Ponds.
DePaul hosts Butler next weekend at Allstate Arena. The Blue Demons and Bulldogs are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday on FS1 and WYLL 1160 AM.

- Eli Cain reached double-figures for the 30th time in his career.
- Billy Garrett Jr. scored at least 10 points in a game for the 80th time in his career.
- Garrett's four assists moves him from 10th to eighth on DePaul's all-time assist list... he passed Gary Garland (385 assists, 1975-79) and Tom Kleinschmidt (386 assists, 1991-95)... Garrett has 387 assists.
- Joe Hanel recorded his second career game in double-figures.
- St. John's leads the all-time series, 22-17... The Red Storm won the first meeting this season, 79-73, at Allstate Arena on Jan. 1 to sweep the season series.
