CHICAGO - This one came right down to the final moments Monday night in a taut BIG EAST home opener for No. 23/22 DePaul.
A huge Brooke Schulte three-pointer with 1:45 left in the game followed by an Amarah Coleman layup and two free throws each from Tanita Allen and Kelly Campbell sparked the Blue Demons to a 61-56 comeback victory at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Schulte led DePaul (11-4, 3-0) to its fifth win in a row with 23 points as the Blue Demons closed out the game outscoring the Friars 12-2. Jacqui Grant came through with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
DePaul was down 54-49 in the fourth quarter when Allen drilled a clutch three-pointer that launched her team on a 12-0 run. In that stretch, the Blue Demon defense forced a shot-clock turnover, took advantage of a Friar illegal screen and watched Schulte seize a key rebound with less than a minute to go.
After a tough first half, the Blue Demons found their shooting touch in the third quarter. At one point, Schulte & Co. made nine shots in a row, including a 7-0 run to put them in front 47-43 with 2:05 left. Grant was 4-for-4 in that nine-shot surge including a pair of threes.
Providence scored the last four points of the quarter and it was 47-47 going into the final 10 minutes.
A cold-shooting DePaul fell behind 16-15 after the first quarter. The only consistent scoring in the first 10 minutes came from Schulte who made her first five shots. Despite Schulte hitting seven of her first eight, the Blue Demons were down 23-21 midway through the second quarter.
The shooting woes continued throughout the second quarter with DePaul converting 11 of 40 shots (27.5 percent) in the first half and missing 11 of its last 12 attempts. Deja Cage connected on a three-pointer to bring the home team within 24-23, but Providence closed out on a 6-0 run for a 29-24 lead. Schulte had 14 points by the break.
