PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Going undefeated on the road in the BIG EAST is a daunting proposition for even the best of basketball programs.
On Sunday, No. 21/19 DePaul won its sixth straight away from Lincoln Park with a 64-55 decision over Providence to cap off a sweep of its two-game trip after prevailing over Creighton on Friday.
Kelly Campbell hit a season-high five 3-pointers and scored 16 points to lead the Blue Demons (18-5, 10-1) who have won 12 of their last 13 games. Brooke Schulte finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Jacqui Grant added 11 points and seven boards.
Opening the third quarter with an Amarah Coleman jumper and a Tanita Allen three gave the Blue Demons a 37-21 lead. It was 51-39 heading into the fourth quarter, but the highlight of the third quarter was easily Chante Stonewall hitting a shot while flat on her back after getting knocked down grabbing an offensive rebound.
A four-point Providence burst brought the home team within 55-47 with 6:30 left in the fourth quarter. The Blue Demons held Providence scoreless for more than four minutes until a late Friars burst brought them within 62-55 with 30 seconds left. Campbell and Allen each hit a foul shot to close it out.
DePaul led 15-9 after one quarter with all the Blue Demon points coming courtesy of long-distance connections. Campbell, Stonewall, Coleman, Allen and Grant helped the team go 5-for-12 from distance over the first 10 minutes.
Providence (10-12, 2-9) came within two early in the second quarter until Schulte's back-to-back jumpers helped give DePaul a 23-15 lead. Schulte's layup off a nice feed from Grant made it 27-17 with 2:34 left in the first half.
Campbell's third 3-pointer of the half helped secure a 32-21 lead heading into halftime. DePaul shot just 11-of-33, but seven of those counted for three points each.
DePaul is back in action on Friday for a BIG EAST test against St. John's that tips at 7 p.m. at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
