LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The DePaul softball team dropped its opening contest at the Troy Cox Classic, 11-3, to RV/RV Oregon State on Friday afternoon at the New Mexico State Softball Complex.
Missy Zoch suffered the loss in the circle for DePaul (2-4). Nerissa Eason earned the win for Oregon State (4-0).
After a scoreless two innings, the Beavers notched three runs in the top of the third. Leadoff batter Jessica Garcia grounded out, but Oregon State's next three batters all singled to load the bases. A double by Nicole Hampton scored all three for a 3-0 lead.
DePaul had a chance to score in the bottom of the fourth with bases loaded and two outs, but Eason struck out Alysia Rodriguez to end the inning.
Oregon State responded with three runs in the fourth. With Beavers on second and third, McKenna Arriola notched an RBI single to score the runner at third. Arriola and Garcia scored the other two runs on a DePaul error.
Haydn Christensen and Micah Fitzgerald notched singles in the bottom of the fourth to start the inning for the Blue Demons. With bases loaded after Eason walked Dylan Christensen, a fielder's choice allowed Jessica Cothern to reach first, Fitzgerald third and Haydn Christensen home. Celeste Franco replaced Cothern on base and stole second after Nicole Pihl struck out. Fitzgerald and Franco scored courtesy of a Megan Leyva double to make the score 6-3.
Kayla Landwehrmier replaced Zoch in the circle at the start of the fifth inning. Oregon State recorded its final five runs of the game off the junior transfer that included two two-run homers. She finished with two strikeouts and faced eight batters.
Meehra Nelson replaced Eason in the bottom of the fifth. She allowed just one hit, struck out one out of the five batters faced.
Zoch finished the game with five strikeouts and one walk in four innings pitched.
The Blue Demons return to action this evening to face host New Mexico State at 5 p.m. CT.
