Kintyhtt Highlights Day One of BIG EAST Championships

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Day one of the BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships completed with one Blue Demon earning a conference championship and multiple student-athletes qualifying for Saturday finals.
Trevor Kintyhtt defended his title in the men's weight throw after he reached a distance of 19.83 meters. The senior bested the field by over a meter in winning the event for the third time in his collegiate career.
Ariel Davis broke her own school record again this season by recording a time of 8.56 in the women's 60m hurdles preliminaries. The sophomore registered the top time in the event and automatically qualified into Saturday's final. Fellow Blue Demons Alexia Harvey (8.75, third) and Sydnee Matthew (9.18, eighth) also qualified for the final.
Sebastian Feyersinger came into the weekend as the defending BIG EAST champion in the men's 200m and started his championship weekend by earning first in the 200m prelims. The junior finished with a time of 21.64, while Chaz Bottoms claimed fifth in 22.19. Both sprinters earned spots in the Saturday final.
Feyersinger also earned a spot into the men's 400m final after sprinting to a time of 48.49. Feyersinger, second in the prelims, joined fellow teammates Jarvis Hill (48.49, third) and Mac Melto (49.33, sixth) in qualifying for the final.
In the women's 60m dash prelims, Shayna Nwokenkwo grabbed the top spot with a time of 7.57. She was .02 seconds faster than second place. Jessica Watkins joins Nwokenkwo in Saturday's final by placing fourth at 7.64. Watkins also qualified for the women's 200m event after taking sixth in the prelims with a time of 25.04.
Three DePaul men's hurdlers qualified for the final of the 60m hurdles after Kyle Decker, Jarvis Hill and Evan Lowry each posted top-eight performances. Decker led the group with an event-best time of 8.44.
Scott Arsenault was just .02 seconds off of the lead runner in the men's 800m. Arsenault took second in the prelims with a time of 1:51.89 and was the only Blue Demon to qualify for the next round.
Jade Nolan was one of many Blue Demons making their BIG EAST Championship debut on Friday. Nolan, competing in the women's long jump, earned a spot on the podium after recording a jump of 5.64 meters. She edged out Monique Felix of Marquette by .02 meters to place third overall.
Freshmen Joshua Pearson and Adam Nelson each qualified for the men's 60m dash final with top-eight finishes. Pearson crossed the finish line with a time of 6.96 to place fifth and Nelson finished in 7.01 for seventh.
Sydnee Matthew grabbed a second-place finish in two of the events of the pentathlon to finish sixth. Matthew recorded 3048 points and was less than 150 points off of a podium spot.
After the first day of competition, DePaul sits in fourth place in both team standings. The women have 21 points after six events, while the men have 25 after five events.
