Men Crowned BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Champions

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Clutch performances down the stretch from the DePaul men's track & field team helped the Blue Demons secure the 2017 BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championship Saturday afternoon. On the women's side, Emily Eller earned a BIG EAST Championship along with multiple trips to the podium.
DePaul won the men's title with a final team score of 146, beating Marquette (135) and Butler (128). The women's team finished fourth overall with 90 team points.
The coaching staff of head coach Dave Dopek and assistant coaches Brandon Murer, Stephanie Townsend and Derrick Peterson with graduate assistants Amanda Macuiba and Jeffrey Sattler earned the Men's Coaching Staff of the Year.
Trevor Kintyhtt was named the Men's Most Outstanding Performer in Field Events after winning the weight throw and placing second in the shot put.
The men's shot put proved to be a pivotal event for the Blue Demons. Kyle Hedge was crowned the conference champion after recording a personal-best toss of 16.48 meters. Kintyhtt was the runner-up at 15.98 meters and Isaac Jimenez grabbed third place with a PR of his own of 15.74 meters to complete the sweep.
Emily Eller won the women's shot put with a throw of 14.02 meters. The new conference champion was the only thrower to surpass the 14-meter mark and won by a tenth of a meter.
Sebastian Feyersinger had a busy day two of the championship for the Blue Demons. The junior won the men's 400m at 47.85 and was followed by Jarvis Hill in third with a time of 48.32. Feyersinger also took second in the 200m after finishing with a time of 21.61.
Kyle Decker capped his weekend with a conference championship in the 60m hurdles by setting another personal best in the event. Decker won the event with a time of 8.36 and was joined by Hill on the podium at 8.74, good for third.
Coming into the women's 60m dash, Shayna Nwokenkwo had the fastest prelim time at 7.57. She bested that time in the final by crossing the finish line at 7.56 and finished second overall. Jessica Watkins took fourth with a time of 7.69. Watkins added a sixth-place finish to her afternoon in the 200m after finishing with a time of 25.04.
Brian Mada repeated as men's triple jump champion after reaching 14.63 meters. Xavier Taylor also found his way to the podium in the event by recording a mark of 13.85 meters to take third.
Alexia Harvey had a runner-up finish in the women's 60m hurdles final by posting a personal record of 8.59. Harvey finished just .09 seconds off of the winner. Sydnee Matthew closed her first BIG EAST Championship with a fifth-place finish and a time of 9.04.
In the final relay of the afternoon, the DePaul men battled with Georgetown for the top spot. The Blue Demons placed second at 3:15.22, missing first place by .39 seconds.
Caroline Muller was one of six student-athletes to reach 1.65 meters in the women's high jump Saturday. The sophomore battled and earned a three-way tie for third place with a pair of Marquette jumpers.
Scott Arsenault registered a time of 1:51.21 on his way to claiming third in the men's 800m event. Arsenault bested his prelim time and earned a personal best on his way to the podium.
Gabrielle Howard found her way to the podium after placing third in the women's triple jump. Howard recorded a mark of 11.84 in the event.
The men's championship between DePaul and Marquette came down to the high jump. Despite the Golden Eagles winning the event, the Blue Demons secured enough points thanks to performances from Taylor (1.90m, fifth) and Scott Midgett (1.85m, sixth) to win the team title.
