Blue Demons Complete Weekend at Southern Illinois

CARBONDALE, Ill. - In the first meet of the 2017 outdoor season, DePaul track & field totaled three event wins and even more top-three performances at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic.
Trevor Kintyhtt kicked off his outdoor season by winning both the discus and hammer events. In the discus, Kintyhtt had a winning throw of 53.21 meters. The senior reached the distance on his third attempt and won by over 1.6 meters. It was a tighter competition in the hammer, but Kintyhtt came out on top after hitting a throw of 55.59 meters.
In her outdoor debut, Abigail Callahan had a runner-up finish in the women's high jump. Callahan was one of three student-athletes to leap over 1.61 meters. In the final results, Callahan had the tie-breaker to earn second overall.
"As the first meet of our outdoor season, the meet served its purpose," said head coach Dave Dopek. "Individuals were able to run some quality competition as solid training work. Field eventers were able to get solid work in their outdoor disciplines."
Sebastian Feyersinger continued his strong performance in the 200m by winning the event with a time of 21.65. Feyersinger finished .06 seconds ahead of the runner-up and beat out 37 other sprinters.
Emily Eller, the BIG EAST champion in the women's indoor shot put, started her outdoor campaign with a throw of 13.69 meters in the shot put. The sophomore hit her mark on her second attempt to place third and finished just .10 meters from the first-place thrower.
Daniel Peterson just missed cracking the 10-minute mark in the men's 3000m steeplechase after finishing at 10:04.05. Peterson finished second overall.
DePaul triple jumpers Brian Mada and Gabrielle Howard each earned top-four finishes on Saturday. Mada claimed a spot on the podium after recording a mark of 14.65 meters. Howard took fourth with a jump of 11.19 meters.
Sydnee Matthew finished in the top six for events on the track and in the field. Matthew placed fifth in the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 15.45 and beat out 11 other hurdlers. In the long jump, Matthew took sixth after jumping to 5.43 meters on her third attempt.
Salomon Wright opened his season with a podium finish in the men's 5000m. Wright came in third out of 23 total runners after crossing the finish line at 15:18.71.
Freshman throwers Rebecca Chouinard and Dylan Marshall each finished in fifth place for their outdoor collegiate debuts. Chouinard placed fifth after reaching 49.19 meters in her attempt. Marshall earned her place when she reached 36.01 meters on her third try.
The DePaul duo of Adam Nelson and Mac Melto each finished with a registered time of 10.97 in the men's 100m dash. Nelson beat Melto by milliseconds to finish sixth overall out of 30 total competitors.
"All and all, the team made the most out of the weekend," stated Dopek. "We'll start spring classes on Monday, have our full team at training, and prepare to get this season in full swing."
In the women's 100m dash, Shayna Nwokenkwo was the top finisher for the Blue Demons. The senior sprinted across the line at 12.27 and placed fifth overall. She was followed by fellow teammate Jessica Watkins with a time of 12.38.
The outdoor season continues for the Blue Demons next weekend at the Joey Haines Invitational in Cape Girardeu, Mo. The one-day meet for DePaul is set for April 1.
