Men's Track & Field Wins BIG EAST Championship

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The DePaul men's track & field team swept the 2017 BIG EAST track & field team titles this year by finishing atop the team standings on Saturday at Villanova Stadium, while Corinne Franz ended her collegiate career by winning the discus throw for the women's team.
In addition to the team championship for the men's team, Sebastian Feyersinger was named the Co-Most Outstanding Track Performer and Trevor Kintyhtt was a unanimous decision for the Most Outstanding Field Performer. The track & field staff of head coach Dave Dopek and assistant coaches Brandon Murer, Derrick Peterson and Stephanie Townsend claimed the BIG EAST Men's Coaching Staff of the Year.
DePaul's men won the team title after securing 204 team points over 22 total event. Marquette finished as the runner-up with 183 points. The women took fourth in the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships by earning 134 points.
Feyersinger produced a pair of conference championship performances with the men's 200m and 400m on his way to being named the Co-Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet. Feyersinger came into Saturday without the top time in either event from the prelims, but bested his BIG EAST counterparts to earn his spots atop the podium. The junior finished with a time of 21.61 in the 200m and 47.45 in the 400m.
DePaul swept the men's shot put thanks to Kyle Hedge, Isaac Jimenez and Kintyhtt finishing first, second and third, respectively. Hedge won the event after reaching 16.45 meters, while Jimenez had a PR of 15.29 meters. Dominic Marshall placed fifth to give DePaul four of the top five spots.
The DePaul senior Franz went out on top when she was crowned the BIG EAST Champion in the women's discus with a throw of 40.59m, while teammate Emily Eller nearly missed the podium in fourth with a throw of 36.55m. Eller claimed hardware when she took second in the shot put with a throw of 13.07m.
Kyle Decker successfully defended his 110m hurdle title by finishing a half second faster than the runner-up from Marquette. Decker finished at 15.09 despite the rainy conditions to take the home the gold. His teammate Jarvis Hill finished fourth in the 110m hurdles and claimed a podium spot in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.68.
Kintyhtt and Hedge dominated the men's discus throw by throwing three meters further than the rest of the field. Kintyhtt won the event to earn his ninth conference championship after hitting 49.44 meters.
Brian Mada remained perfect in BIG EAST triple jump events after winning on Saturday with a distance of 14.87 meters. The sophomore edged out second place by .23 meters.
Sophomore Alexia Harvey finished second in the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 14.00. Sydnee Matthew also earned a top-five finish by crossing the finish line at 14.79.
DePaul's 4x100 relay team placed second out of the six total teams. Adam Nelson, Chaz Bottoms, Isaac Walker and Feyersinger helped the Blue Demons to a time of 42.44. Bottoms, Walker and Feyersinger were joined by Hill in the 4x400 relay to also place second.
The quartet of Laura Edwards, Harvey, Jessica Watkins, and Shayna Nwokenkwo placed second in the women's 4x100 at 46.70, while Edwards, Ariel Davis, Simone Carr, and Rutendo Chimbaru combined to take third in the 4x400 with a time of 3:48.69.
Nwokenkwo added another podium finish in her final BIG EAST Championship when she took third in the 100m at 11.98. Watkins followed behind in fourth with a time of 12.02.
Adam Nelson placed fourth in the men's 100m final and matched his personal record in the event at 10.87. The freshman jumped two places from his prelim finish. Joshua Pearson also improved two spots to sixth at a time of 11.11.
In the triple jump, senior Gabrielle Howard added another podium finish by placing third with a mark of 11.72m. Her teammate Caroline Muller also finished in third place in the high jump at 1.65m.
The DePaul track & field teams now await the qualifying lists for the NCAA West Preliminaries in Austin, Texas. The West Prelims are scheduled to take place May 25 through May 27.
