Musketeers advanced on 4-2 PK advantage
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The women's soccer team's 2018 campaign ended Sunday after a hard-fought battle to the full 110 minutes and through a penalty kick shootout against the Xavier Musketeers. Xavier pulled out the win on PK's 4-2.Â
How it Happened
In a back-and-forth equally physical battle that saw three yellow cards, the Blue Demons fought through what turned out to be a scoreless first 45 minutes. Both teams were tied at that point in shots, saves and corner kicks.Â
DePaul found plenty of chances; Cerny's lone attempt on to the night just hit the goalpost and rebounded out before Xavier would clear. Other attempts would sail either wide or high.Â
Xavier scored first in the 63rd minute off the foot of Samantha Dewey - the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year - to give her team the go-ahead goal. As time winded down, DePaul relentlessly fought for chances. They found one when Jade Eriksen-Russo sent a cross over to Avery Hay just in front of the left post. Hay sent the ball in towards the goal with the back of her left leg that found the inside of the net to tie the game up at 1-1.Â
Hay would notch her first career goal and Eriksen-Russo tallied her second career assist.Â
Through two scoreless overtime periods, the game was sent into PK's. Xavier's Toni Bizzaro, who played all 110 minutes, would take a backseat to Olivia Jenkins, who had played in just three matches all year. Freshman Mollie Eriksson would remain in goal for the Blue Demons.Â
Cerny took the first attempt but Jenkins was there for the save. Xavier made their first attempt to gain a 1-0 advantage. Madeline Frick made her attempt to even it up, but the Musketeers would keep the advantage, 2-1.Â
Mikaela Hoard took her shot but Jenkins made the stop and Xavier's advantage increased to 3-1. Despite Eriksen-Russo's successful PK, the Musketeers would make their fourth attempt and mathematically take the game.Â
DePaul ended the season with an overall record of 8-6-5 and 4-3-2 BIG EAST.Â
