Thursday in Milwaukee, Sunday at Wish Field
CHICAGO - DePaul women's soccer will head north to Milwaukee on Thursday to face the Marquette Golden Eagles in an evening contest set for 7:00 p.m. at the Valley Fields. To bookend the first week of October, the Blue Demons will host the Xavier Musketeers on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. afternoon match.Â
Last Time Out
After falling to then-No. 7 Georgetown (now-No. 5) 3-0 last Thursday, DePaul split the weekend with their first overtime victory against Creighton, 2-1, to improve to 6-4-2 on the season, 2-1 in BIG EAST play. In a fairly chippy game, the first goal wouldn't come until the 32nd minute by Creighton midfielder Kylin Grubb, who headed the ball just over the fingertips of rookie netminder Mollie Eriksson off a cross from Emma Braasch to give the Bluejays the go-ahead goal.Â
In the 54th minute, a string of touches would lead to an own goal by Creighton, giving DePaul the equalizer. A free kick by Elizabeth Parrilli was headed by a player from Creighton that deflected off the goalkeeper's hands into the post before bouncing into the net. A Creighton defender cleared the ball, but the referee ruled it past the goal line to make it a tie game, 1-1.
The remainder of regulation would see DePaul win the corners battle 4-2 (Creighton would earn 1 in OT) and outshoot the Bluejays 16-7 before the game-winner in the 94th minute. DePaul forward Morgan Turner placed a cross right in front of the goal where Madeline Frick was waiting and placed it in the back of the net for the golden goal, her first game-winner and third goal of the season.
Senior captain Franny Cerny tallied five shots, while sophomore Jade Eriksen-Russo, sophomore transfer Jessica Lazo and Frick each notched two shots on goal. Eriksson made four saves against the Bluejay offense.
Scouting the Golden Eagles (3-8-1, 1-2-0)
Marquette most recently secured a 1-0 victory over St. John's after dropping their first two BIG EAST contests to Butler and Villanova. Freshman forward Alyssa Bombacino scored the golden goal in the 77th minute against St. John's in her first career start, only later to receive the title of BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for her efforts.
