10/31/2018 9:29:00 PM | MEN'S SOCCER
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- DePaul men's soccer concluded its 2018 season at Marquette on Wednesday night in a 2-0 battle. The Blue Demons finished the season 5-9-3, 2-5-2 BIG EAST.
How it happened
The Golden Eagles got on the board early in the 19th minute before adding another goal in the 30th minute. The two first half goals were left unanswered by DePaul but not without multiple efforts by the Blue Demons for the remaining 60 minutes.
Timmy Iscra and DePaul had their first attempt on goal but his header flew just too low and into the hands of their goalkeeper. Drew Nuelle made a big save early for the Blue Demons in the eighth minute off a quick volley from Marquette to keep the match scoreless.
Testing the Marquette goalkeeper eight different times in the second half alone, DePaul fired off 10 shots in attempts to get on the board. A foul in the box led to a penalty kick attempt by El-Shafei that went just slightly too far wide and rebounded to the right off the post. Jake Fuderer, Sasa Labovic and Timmy Iscra all put up two shots on goal.
Ultimately, it wasn't the Blue Demons night as logistically, with Xavier defeating Butler 5-3, the Musketeers had the advantage in points to secure the final spot in the BIG EAST Championship Tournament.
Marquette, Providence, St. John's and Xavier all advanced to the Tournament and will play on Saturday. DePaul defeated St. John's and Providence and tied St. John's. Out of the three teams below the Blue Demons in the standings, DePaul lost to Villanova and Butler and tied Seton Hall.
