Five players score in double-figures as DePaul preps for next week's season opener
CHICAGO – Eli Cain scored 19 points and Paul Reed produced a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double as DePaul defeated Rockhurst, 72-65, in an exhibition game at Wintrust Arena. The game was DePaul's lone public preseason action ahead of next week's season opener against Bethune-Cookman.
DePaul was tested before ultimately proving to be too much for the visiting Hawks as the Blue Demons led by 11 on a Devin Gage bucket with 4:40 left on the clock. DePaul led for nearly the entire night, but 11 three-pointers by Rockhurst kept the visitors within striking distance.
For the Blue Demons, Cain led all game scorers with 19 points while Gage and Reed added 12 points apiece. Femi Olujobi (11 points, six rebounds) and Jaylen Butz (10 points, four rebounds) rounded out the Blue Demons that finished with double-digit points for a DePaul team that worked in ten different players on the evening.
Chris Hamil led the Hawks with 16 points and Eddie Muench added 13 points.
The Blue Demons and Hawks began Thursday's matchup with a tightly contested opening six minutes. The two teams traded the lead three times, before DePaul began to pull away, using a 7-0 lead to move ahead 20-13 with 9:40 left in the opening half. However, Rockhurst would keep the deficit in single digits over the next four minutes, before using a 6-0 run to cut the lead to three at 29-26 with 3:54 to go until the intermission. Over the final three minutes and 30 seconds of the first half the Blue Demons outscored the Hawks 10-8 to go into the half leading by five, 39-34.
Seven Blue Demons scored at least three points in the opening 20 minutes as Dave Leitao worked in nine different players for DePaul. Gage led the Blue Demons with seven first half points while Reed chipped in six points and six rebounds.
