Blue Demons Shine on Day One of Gopher Invitational

Led by Tonejc brothers, DePaul goes 6-2 in opening rounds of action
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The DePaul men's tennis team opened play on Friday at the three-day Gopher Invitational on the courts of the Baseline Tennis Center.
The Blue Demon cohort of Vito Tonejc, Fran Tonejc, Boris Spanjaard, and Tripp Tuff combined to post a 6-2 overall record through one round of singles action and two rounds of doubles play on day one.
On the singles side, V. Tonejc started off strong for DePaul with a two-set victory over Denver's Daniel Krulig, 7-6 (4), 6-3. F. Tonejc continued the winning ways with a three-set win over Eric Morris of Denver, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Spanjaard provided the spark of the day for the Blue Demons after fighting off seven match points in the third set to defeat John Speicher of Dartmouth, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6. Tuff fell in first round action to Roko Glasnovic of Dartmouth, 1-6, 4-6.
Singles action continues tomorrow with two rounds of main draw action, and one round of consolation matches.
Through two rounds of doubles play, DePaul went 3-1 with the duo of Spanjaard and Tuff advancing to Saturday's third round with victories over Speicher and Glasnovic of Dartmouth (6-4) and Drake's Hall and Philips, 7-6 (4). The tandem of Tonejc brothers went 1-1 on day one with a first round win over Krulig and Morris of Denver 6-3 and a defeat at the hands of Northwestern's Pickens and Fasano, 4-6.
Day two of the Gopher Invitational will commence at 8 a.m. CT with two rounds of singles play followed by one round of doubles.
In other action, Blue Demons Christopher Casati, Tamas Zador, and Conor O'Meara closed out day one at the Redbird Invitational in Normal, Ill.
In singles play, Casati took down first round opponent Stratton Brown of Creighton 6-3,7-5. Zador fell to Marquette's Julian Robinson 5-7,3-6. Creighton's Armando Gandini edged O'Meara 6-3,6-4.
Doubles action saw the tandem of Casati and O'Meara find success over Savard and Botha of Chicago State, 8-5.
The Redbird Invitational will continue tomorrow with two rounds of doubles play and one round of singles.
