Blue Demons rally in fourth quarter for 82-67 win against Princeton
CANCUN – No. 16/16 DePaul saved its best performance for what Michael Jordan used to call "winning time"---that critical juncture in the fourth quarter that often decides outcomes.
Trailing Princeton for practically three quarters, the Blue Demons rallied for an 82-67 victory Thursday in the opener of the Cancun Challenge.
DePaul (2-1) did not take its first lead until the 31st minute on Sonya Morris' three-pointer. The lead was 69-63 when coach Doug Bruno's team scored 11 points in a row to complete the comeback as the Blue Demons outscored Princeton 24-9 in the fourth quarter.
Mart'e Grays led the way with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting while Chante Stonewall contributed all over the court with 16 points, a career-high 14 rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Rebekah Dahlman added 11 points, Ashton Millender contributed 10 points, six rebounds and four assists, Morris scored nine points and Kelly Campbell finished with eight points, nine rebounds and three assists.
After enjoying the sun-splashed resort activities at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya with temperatures in the 80s, it was back to business for these Blue Demons on Thanksgiving Day.
It was an uphill battle much of the afternoon, tightening up in the middle of the third quarter as DePaul trailed 50-47. A pair of Campbell free throws tied it 58-58 heading into the fourth quarter.
Princeton (1-4) opened the game red-hot from the beyond the three-point arc with Sydney Boyer and Carlie Littlefield going a combined 6-for-6 in the first half. Boyer scored 11 in a row to close out the first quarter as DePaul trailed 24-19.
Stonewall and Grays helped the Blue Demons fight back from a 15-point deficit in the first quarter and maintained their impact throughout the second quarter.
They sparked an 18-7 run to close out the second quarter and bring their team within 46-42 at halftime. Both forwards were scoring on a combination of outside shots and baskets in the paint.
At intermission, Grays had 16 points while Stonewall had 11 points and nine rebounds. Millender contributed eight points. The Tigers went 10-for-19 from long distance in the first half.
DePaul made an adjustment defending the three-pointer in the second half as Princeton shot just 1-for-11 after halftime.
The Blue Demons are right back on the Hard Rock Riviera Maya court Friday for a 10 a.m. (CT) game against Kansas State.
