Max Strus ties school record with eight three-pointers and provides highlight reel dunk
CHICAGO – A DePaul-career high 34 points and 13 rebounds from Max Strus led the Blue Demons past UIC, 90-70, Friday night at Wintrust Arena as five different Blue Demons finished in double figures against the Flames. Devin Gage added 15 points, six steals, five assists and five rebounds for the Blue Demons.
Paul Reed had 13 points and seven rebounds, Jalen Coleman-Lands finished with 10 points and two rebounds and Eli Cain posted 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
The Blue Demons shot .525 from the field in addition to .462 from behind the arc en route to the win, while out rebounding the Flames 41-30.
Five early points from Coleman-Lands along with three pointers from both Strus and Cain got the Blue Demons started, as DePaul (7-2) took an 11-2 lead just two and a half minutes into the action. Seven and a half minutes later, Gage finished a right-handed dunk in transition and then Reed made two free throws, pushing the DePaul lead to 10 at 23-13.
With 4:41 left in the opening half, Strus knocked down his second three-pointer in as many possessions, opening up the DePaul lead to 22 points at 40-18. Keeping the pressure on, the Blue Demons would finish the half on a 10-0 run to go into the break leading 52-28. Strus totaled eight three-pointers in the game to tie DePaul's single-game record set by Draelon Burns in November 2008.
Out of the break, UIC (4-7) cut the DePaul lead to 17, however the Blue Demons would quickly reassert their control over the action, using an 11-0 run, capitalized by an old fashioned three-point play from Reed to pull ahead by 28 points at 65-37 with 15:30 to go in the game.
From that point on, for the second time in as many games, it was all DePaul over the final 15 minutes. Strus would add some dramatics down the stretch with an arena-shaking, two-handed poster dunk over a UIC defender before Reed would get in on the action, taking the ball coast to coast for an emphatic dunk of his own, adding an exclamation point to a game that was already in hand.
For UIC, Tarkus Ferguson led the Flames with 20 points while Marcus Ottey added 17.
DePaul returns to action on Wednesday as Incarnate Word travels to Chicago for a 7:30 p.m. tip at Wintrust Arena. The game can be seen on FS2 and heard on WIND (560 AM).
