Kelly Campbell, Mart'e Grays and Dee Bekelja all score 18 points Monday night
CHICAGO – It didn't take long for No. 20/18 DePaul to get back in sync after not playing for a week.
The Blue Demons, buoyed by the upbeat presence of coach Doug Bruno, ran away from Tennessee State 95-73 Monday night at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Bruno, who underwent successful back surgery just six days ago, was at the helm to watch Kelly Campbell, Mart'e Grays and Dee Bekelja score 18 points apiece---a career high for Bekelja on 6-of-6 shooting including all three from beyond the arc. Campbell added eight rebounds, tied a career high with six steals and set a season high in scoring.
Lexi Held contributed 10 points and five assists while Chante Stonewall came up just short of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
It was DePaul's fourth win in a row while Tennessee State has opened the season with 11 consecutive losses.
Behind the accuracy of Campbell and Bekelja, the Blue Demons shot out to a 26-6 lead towards the end of the first quarter. Campbell connected on three of her first four attempts from behind the arc and Bekelja made her first two shots.
Tennessee State closed out the quarter on a 9-0 run to draw within 26-15 heading into the second quarter.
The Tigers were within 12 of the home team until Bruno's ball club stretched the advantage back to 17 midway through the period.
The Blue Demons outscored the visiting team 12-6 down the stretch led by Campbell's outside shooting in building a 52-31 advantage at the break. The junior point guard had her best first half of the season with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting including 4-of-5 from deep. She also added five rebounds and four steals. Campbell finished 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from distance.
Grays made four of her first six shots and totaled 11 by halftime while Stonewall had eight points and six rebounds and Bekelja seven points.
Maintaining a 20-plus point lead, DePaul upped the margin to 63-37 on a Bekelja three off a nice feed from Tanita Allen midway through the third quarter.
Bekelja continued her flawless marksmanship, making all five of her shots over the first three quarters including three from behind the arc as the Blue Demons led 78-53. Her 15 points going into the fourth quarter was one shy of a career high.
Grays had 16 points after three quarters and Stonewall was closing in on a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
Campbell and Grays kept the DePaul offense rolling early in the fourth quarter as the home team led 86-59. Both Campbell and Bekelja were nearing career highs in scoring.
The Blue Demons are back in action Thursday night with a short trip to Loyola in a renewal of the Red Line Rivalry.
