Blue Demons score 40 points in fourth quarter of 102-76 win at Loyola
CHICAGO – It was the night before their Christmas break, and the Blue Demons shared among one another the ideal holiday gift:
A DePaul five-game winning streak.
Behind seven Blue Demons in double figures and a 40-point fourth quarter, No. 20/18 DePaul came away with a 102-76 victory over Loyola Thursday night at Gentile Arena. The 40 points is the second-most in a quarter in program history behind the 41 at Northwestern last season.
Rebekah Dahlman notched the first double-double of her DePaul career with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds while Chante Stonewall had 14 points.
Lexi Held scored 13 points in 17 minutes, Ashton Millender and Sonya Morris both finished with 12 points. Kelly Campbell came through with 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Mart'e Grays rounded out the magnificent seven with 11 points.
Coach Doug Bruno was pleased with his balanced scoring with contributions from so many of his players. Dee Bekelja finished just one point shy of making it eight in double figures.
Campbell opened the third quarter with a three-pointer followed by a rebound put-back and DePaul (9-3) led 41-26. After a five-point Rambler burst, Stonewall hit a jumper and Allen picked up her third steal that resulted in a breakaway layup for a 14-point margin.
Dahlman was having quite a night. The senior guard hit a three for a 48-35 lead, giving her nine points and 11 rebounds midway through the third quarter. Stonewall scored inside and came right back with a long-distance connection for the biggest lead to that point, 53-35.
Held scored five unanswered points as the Blue Demons led 62-42 heading into the fourth quarter.
Grays jump-started the final period with a long three and Bekelja scored to make it 67-44. Stonewall came through with another scoring flurry with a layup and a three-pointer, increasing the margin to 72-46 with 7:45 left in the game.
DePaul jumped out to an 8-3 lead off the opening tip, but the Ramblers responded with an 11-2 run. Allen's basket followed by a Millender three and then Allen's steal and layup moved the Blue Demons in front 15-14. Dee Bekelja's basket just before the horn made it 17-14 after one quarter.
A Morris connection from behind the arc gave DePaul its biggest lead of the game to that point, 27-20 midway through the second quarter. Loyola (6-5) crept within four when Morris answered again with a nice behind-the-back dribble for an easy layup.
A Millender three-pointer with less than three minutes until halftime put the visiting team ahead by nine. Dahlman's second 3-point play of the first half sent her team into the locker room with a 36-24 advantage.
Millender led the Blue Demons with nine points at halftime while Campbell had four rebounds and four assists.
The Blue Demons return from Christmas break on Dec. 29 to open its BIG EAST season against Creighton at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
