Boston College uses late surge to knock off Blue Demons
CHICAGO – Visiting Boston College led for just 32 seconds of the entire game, but it was the last 32 seconds as the Eagles recorded a 65-62 decision over DePaul at Wintrust Arena. The loss was the first of the season at home for DePaul in the final non-conference game of the regular season.
A frantic first half opened with the Blue Demons taking a 20-11 lead midway through the first frame. Eli Cain continued his hot shooting from the outside as he buried a pair of three-pointers to get the DePaul offense started. Two free throws by Cain pushed DePaul's lead to nine with 11:02 on the clock.
The teams traded baskets over the remainder of the half and a three-point play by Jaylen Butz gave the Blue Demons their largest lead before intermission at 32-20 with just over three minutes on the clock. Boston College scored the final eight points of the first half and DePaul took a 32-28 lead into the break.
As fast as the first half started, the second half bogged down as each side turned up the defensive pressure.
DePaul (8-3) held the advantage, but the Eagles pulled to within two at 45-43 with just over nine minutes left. Coming out of a time out, Cain dropped in a jumper off the glass and Strus converted a three-point play to push the lead back to seven points with 7:49 on the clock.
Boston College (9-2) didn't go away as the Eagles pulled to within one and once again DePaul answered as Femi Olujobi hit a 16-footer and Strus coverted a steal and slam for a 60-55 lead with just over two minutes to go in the game.
The Eagles made one last push and two free throws by Wynston Tabbs gave Boston College its first lead of the game at 61-60. Following a DePaul miss on the other end, Tabbs converted two more free throws with 8.7 seconds left.
After two free throws by Devin Gage, Nik Popovic concluded the scoring for the game and a half court attempt by Strus went wide at the buzzer.
Strus led DePaul with 16 points and nine rebounds while Cain scored 14 points. Paul Reed grabbed 11 rebounds with six points while Butz finished the game with seven points and nine boards.
Popvic led the Eagles with 19 points while Tabbs added 15 and four assists.
DePaul opens the BIG EAST schedule on Dec. 29 when Xavier visits Wintrust Arena. Start time is 1 p.m. on FS1 and WSCR 670 AM.
