Six Blue Demons in double figures lead to 102-88 win over Temple
CHICAGO – No. 20/14 DePaul put on an offensive show Monday, much to the delight of more than 1,700 screaming school children who pumped up the decibel levels at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Ashton Millender paced six Blue Demons in double figures with 23 points, five rebounds and four assists leading to a 102-88 victory over Temple on Field Trip Day.
Rebekah Dahlman had 16 points, four assists and three steals, Chante Stonewall 15 points and seven rebounds while Tanita Allen and Lexi Held each scored 13 points with Allen adding seven rebounds.
Mart'e Grays came through with 10 points and six rebounds and Kelly Campbell approached triple-double territory with nine points, nine assists, eight rebounds and three steals.
Coach Doug Bruno's team shot nearly 41 percent from beyond the arc (18-of-44)---second highest this season to the 22 against Savannah State.
A balanced scoring output midway through the third quarter helped DePaul (5-3) maintain its halftime advantage. Held connected on her third-straight shot from long distance, and a pair of Campbell free throws made it 64-47 in favor of the home team.
An Allen three-point play increased the margin to 67-47 before the Owls responded by scoring nine unanswered points to draw within 67-56 with 3:16 left in the third quarter. It was the closest they had come since the outset of the second quarter.
An Allen three off a nice feed from Dahlman made it 81-65 heading into the fourth quarter. Millender had 20 points after three quarters, seven shy of her career high. Campbell was closing on a triple double with nine points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
Nine consecutive Dahlman points provided DePaul with a 93-75 lead early in the fourth quarter. Temple came back with seven in a row to make it 93-82 with 5:56 left in the game.
With the enthusiastic support of the elementary school students, DePaul scored the first eight points of the game.
Temple (2-5) narrowed the deficit to 14-13 when the home team closed out the first quarter on a 15-4 run. Millender was hot from the start, knocking down his first four shots including three from behind the arc.
Behind the sharpshooting of Millender and Held, the Blue Demons outscored Temple 18-7 at the outset of the second quarter in building a 47-24 lead.
Held, a freshman guard who has been coming into her own in recent games, made four of her first five shots including a pair from three-point range.
The Owls closed out the quarter with a 12-2 burst and trailed 49-36 at halftime.
Millender scored 14 points in the first half on 5-of-8 shooting and 4-of-7 from deep. Held had 10 points and Grays added nine points and four rebounds. Campbell was already filling the stat sheet with five points and six assists by intermission.
The Blue Demons are right back on the Doug Bruno Court Wednesday for a 7 p.m. rivalry game against Northwestern.
