ARLINGTON, Texas - Freshmen led the day for DePaul as the Blue Demons used the bat of shortstop Maranda Gutierrez and the pitching arm of Pat Moore to pull out a 1-0 win against UT Arlington in game two of the UTA Maverick Tournament.
With Saturday's win, the Blue Demons have now held opponents scoreless in seven contests during the 2018 season.
Gutierrez put DePaul (10-2) on the board in the top of the second inning with a solo home run over the center field wall. The shot was her second home run of the day as she also had a solo blast against Sam Houston State in the Blue Demons' 5-0 win.
In the bottom of the second, the Blue Demons' defense helped escape an offensive threat by UT Arlington (6-5). With a runner on first, Reagan Wright lifted a double to the right field fence. After gathering the ball, right fielder Brianna Viles threw a bullet to Gutierrez who cutoff the exchange and rifled a throw home where DePaul catcher Jessica Cothern tagged out a charging pinch runner in Kacyci Moore at the plate.
Moore (4-1) continued her dominance in the center circle, cruising to victory while collecting her second combined shutout of the season. The left-hander tallied four strikeouts while allowing just six hits. In five appearances, Moore has only allowed 17 hits in 33.1 innings of work. Sophomore Missy Zoch came on in the seventh inning to seal the 1-0 victory, picking up her second save of 2018.
DePaul will conclude the UTA Maverick Tournament on Sunday where the Blue Demons will face Sam Houston State at 10 a.m. and UT Arlington at 12:30 p.m.
