ARLINGTON, Texas - The DePaul softball team's six-game winning streak was snapped on Sunday afternoon as the Blue Demons were edged 4-2 in eight innings by UT Arlington to wrap up their run at the UTA Maverick Tournament.
While two Blue Demon errors in the opening inning allowed UT Arlington (7-5) to take an early 1-0 lead, DePaul (11-3) responded with a run of its own in the bottom frame to tie the contest at 1-1. With two outs in the inning, catcher Jessica Cothern dropped a double to the right center field gap. On the next pitch, right fielder Megan Leyva singled through the right side to drive in Cothern.
After six scoreless frames, the contest went into extra innings where the Mavericks used a three-run home run by Madison Miller to upend the Blue Demons 4-2. In the extra inning, a runner was placed on second with the international tiebreaker rule in effect. Reagan Wright reached on a walk to lead off the inning and both runners would come home to score on the three-run bomb to left by Miller.
The Blue Demons managed to cut UT Arlington's gap to two runs, 4-2, capitalizing on a Maverick fielding error, but could not overcome the deficit down the stretch. Sophomore Missy Zoch (6-2) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs, two unearned, while striking out seven Mavericks. UTA's Randi Phillips (4-2) picked up the victory allowing just two runs, one earned, on four hits.
DePaul returns to action next weekend as the Blue Demons travel to Atlanta, Ga., to compete in the I-75 Challenge against Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, and Georgia State March 2-4.
