INDIANAPOLIS - Once again, the short-handed Blue Demons could not overcome starting out with a deficit.
This time, DePaul women's tennis came up short 4-3 to Butler Saturday in a BIG EAST Conference matchup.
The Blue Demons (6-7, 1-2) had to forfeit one singles match and one doubles match before the opening serve. Marija Jovicic and Aspasia Avgeri teamed up to win at No. 2 doubles, but a loss at the No. 1 spot plus forfeiting at No. 3 gave Butler the doubles point.
The Blue Demons needed to win four singles matches and came close. Patricia Lancranjan was victorious at No. 1 singles and Aspasia Avgeri won her match at No. 4. Milica Tesic gave DePaul its third point after winning at No. 5.
This was the first time Butler has prevailed over coach Mark Ardizzone's program since 2007.
Lancranjan improved her dual-season record to a team-leading 10-2 in the dual-match season and 12-4 overall. Tesic is now 8-5 in the dual season and 13-12 overall while Avgeri moved to 6-4 in the spring season.
DePaul has a challenging nonconference assignment at 2 p.m. Sunday in Bloomington against the Big Ten's talented Indiana which is 14-8 after a 4-3 loss to Purdue on Saturday.
The Hoosiers are 12-3 this spring at IU Varsity Courts.
