CHICAGO - The DePaul softball team dropped its first series of 2018 on Sunday as Georgetown edged the Blue Demons 5-4 in eight innings.
DePaul (24-13, 7-2 BE) jumped on the scoreboard first for the 25th time in 2018, taking a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first. The Blue Demons started the inning with back-to-back-to-back singles by Jessica Cothern, Kate Polucha, and Megan Leyva. With two outs in the inning, a chopper hit to second by Angela Scalzitti was mishandled by Georgetown's second baseman allowing Polucha to cross the plate for the 1-0 DePaul lead.
The Blue Demons mustered another two-out rally in the bottom of the second to push their lead to 2-0. Cothern reached on a single up the middle and then came around to score DePaul's second run of the contest on an RBI-double to the right-center field gap by Polucha.
Georgetown (11-26, 3-5 BE) fought back in the top of the third to take a 4-2 lead. A two-run single to center by Mallory Belknap tied the game at 2-2 while a wild pitch by DePaul's Pat Moore with runners on second and third gave Georgetown its first lead, 3-2. Eight pitches later, first baseman Noelle Holiday increased the Hoyas' gap to 4-2 with an RBI-single to shallow right.
Facing the final out of the contest, designated player Morgan Greenwood rose to occasion and tied the game at 4-4 as the left-handed hitter ripped a two-run, opposite field home run over the left field fence, forcing extra innings for the third time in 2018.
In the top of the eighth, Georgetown's Sarah Bennett would hand the Hoyas the eventual game-winning run as she lifted a solo home run over the left field fence for the 5-4 victory.
Potential weather conditions have canceled DePaul's next contest against Illinois State. The Blue Demons will return to action on Saturday when they open a three-game set against Creighton in Omaha, Nebraska.
