Madeline Frick scores late in 2-1 loss in Dallas

DALLAS – The DePaul women's soccer team could not overcome two early goals by Southern Methodist and fell to the Mustangs in their season opener, 2-1, on Thursday night at Westcott Field in Dallas, Texas.

In the first ever meeting between the two teams, DePaul's All-BIG EAST Preseason senior forward Franny Cerny and senior midfielder Madeline Frick had multiple chances to find the back of the net — both with three shots — but were unsuccessful.

At the end of the first half, Frick had a scoring opportunity but shot it just high of the crossbar. At the end of the second half, Cerny had two shots on goal – one saved by the goalkeeper and the other wide, but it was Frick who would end up scoring the lone goal for the Blue Demons in the 86^th minute to cut SMU's lead to one.

The Mustangs opened up their season with two early goals from junior forward Allie Thornton. Her first would come quickly in the 9^th minute and the second just seven minutes later via a penalty kick.

SMU outshot DePaul 6-2 in the first half only to find the opposite in the second half. The offensive effort from the Blue Demons shined through with seven shots to the Mustangs' three. Despite that effort, the Mustangs' goalkeeper Samantha Estrada would make four saves in the second half, shutting down any other opportunity DePaul would find.

Head coach Erin Chastain and the Blue Demons will welcome UMass Lowell to Chicago on Sunday, Aug. 19. Kickoff against the River Hawks is scheduled for noon on Wish Field.

Scouting the River Hawks
UMass Lowell will open their season with two road games. First, at Loyola Chicago on Friday, August 17 at 7:00 p.m., then against the Blue Demons on Sunday at Wish Field at noon. The River Hawks finished the 2017 season 5-6-6 overall and 2-3-3 in conference play.
