The Blue Demons fall in three sets to Loyola in their first Chicago Cup match.

CHICAGO - DePaul dropped to Loyola in three sets 0-3 (14-25, 20-25, 13-25) in the first match of the Chicago Cup.

"Hats off to those Loyola middles," said head coach Marie Zidek. "They both had career nights and we were not able to match their points scoring.

"While we were able to hold their outsides to six kills a piece through our block and Belle playing amazing defense in the left back, we were not able to defend or match the points scoring done by their middles and right side.

"We look forward to improving on this tomorrow and for another chance to compete."

In the first set DePaul fell behind 5-1 early on and kills from Isabell De La Rosa and Claire Anderson would bring the Blue Demons closer. Eventually, DPU was able to get within four after a service error made the score 4-8. With the Blue Demons only able to reach 14 points, Loyola ignited a set-closing run to take the first set 25-14.

In a closer battle from the first, Loyola jumped out to a 3-0 lead but DePaul responded twice to make it 2-4. A three-point run but LUC into a comfortable 7-2 lead and DePaul trailed behind until they held Loyola at set-point on a four-point run to create just a four-point difference, but Loyola would take the second set 25-20.

DePaul struggled offensively in the third set, tying the score up once at 2-2 but falling behind 7-15. A three-run drive put the Blue Demons down by just five points but the rest came slowly as LUC would go on to take the final set 25-13.

DePaul will continue on in the Chicago Cup tomorrow, facing Northwestern at 10 a.m. and UIC at 5 p.m.
