DePaul On the Road for First BIG EAST Match
9/20/2018 12:34:00 PM | WOMEN'S SOCCER
CHICAGO - Conference play in in sights for DePaul women's soccer as they travel to South Orange, New Jersey for their first BIG EAST match of the season against Seton Hall at noon CT on Saturday.
Last Time Out
In a back-and-forth physical game on both sides of the ball, DePaul (4-3-2) dropped their non-conference finale of the season at Wish Field, 1-0, to Alabama (6-3-1) on Sunday afternoon. Through the duration of the first half, both teams would put up eight shots, but none found the back of the net. Senior captain Franny Cerny had a great chance with about 20 seconds remaining and tried to place the ball in the back left of the net but it fell just wide to hit the post before bouncing back out. It wasn't until the 77th minute that the Crimson Tide would slip the ball past freshman goalkeeper Mollie Eriksson's hands. Sophomore Jade Eriksen-Russo found her way around 'Bama defenders before giving it one last shot before the clock ran out and it lifted just high of the net. DePaul moves to 4-3-2 on the season.
Scouting the Pirates
Seton Hall (2-3-4) fought to a 2-2 draw against LIU Brooklyn on Wednesday. The game was tied 1-1 after 30 minutes and after falling behind 2-1, the Pirates successfully converted a penalty kick for the equalizing tally in the 81st minute. With 10 newcomers, Seton Hall returns 77.2 percent of its scorers from last season, including its three captains and an experienced sophomore class. Senior goalkeeper Anna MacLean notched five shots while captain Siobhan McGovern tallied six shots, three on goal - a season high for her. All of the four overtime matches Seton Hall has played have ended in draws.
2017 Matchup
The two teams battled to a double-overtime 1-1 draw last season, giving the Blue Demons their first point in conference play in their BIG EAST season opener. Sophomore Morgan Turner scored her second goal of the season in the 25th minute and her team would hold that lead for 62 minutes until the 87th minute equalizer from the Pirates to force overtime. DePaul finished the match with a 12-9 shot advantage after Cerny's last attempt was blocked by the Seton Hall goalkeeper.
