Late surge leads Blue Demons past Villanova 66-59 in overtime
VILLANOVA, Pa.  – Although it's a pattern DePaul doesn't necessarily want to keep repeating, the Comeback Kids struck again on Sunday.
After trailing the entire second half, the Blue Demons rallied for a 66-59 overtime BIG EAST victory over Villanova.
DePaul (12-5, 3-2) outscored the Wildcats 11-4 in the extra session after the game was tied 55-55 in regulation time.
Chante Stonewall led the winning team with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds while Mart'e Grays added a double-double of her own (12 points, 10 rebounds). Ashton Millender scored 12 points, Rebekah Dahlman 11 points and Tanita Allen nine clutch points. Kelly Campbell finished with six points, 12 rebounds and five assists.
The Blue Demons jump-started overtime with a Stonewall basket followed by a drive by Chante and a deft pass to a wide-open Tanita Allen for a layup. Villanova answered and it was 59-57 with 2:32 left.
Allen came up big again with two clutch free throws for a 61-57 lead at the 2:10 mark. Stonewall buried a long jumper and Campbell's foul shot made it 64-57 with :43 to go. Following a Villanova score, Millender hit a foul shot.
Villanova led 51-45 early in the fourth quarter and continued working the shot clock as is the Wildcat way. A Grays corner jumper made it a four-point game with 6:11 left.
Tanita Allen followed up her missed shot with a rebound put-back to put DePaul within 53-49 with 4:42 showing on the scoreboard. Stonewall hit a foul shot with 3:58 to go.
With 2:49 left, Stonewall hit two more free throws bringing DePaul within 53-52. After Kelly Jekot scored for the Wildcats, Grays hit a clutch three-pointer and it was tied 55-55 with :48 to go. That was the score heading into overtime.
After falling behind 32-25 early in the third quarter, Dahlman answered back for DePaul with back-to-back threes. The Wildcats went back up by six when Stonewall converted on a three-point play.
Dahlman hit a pair of free throws to bring the visiting team within 40-39 when the Wildcats closed out the third quarter on a 6-2 spurt to lead 46-41 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Millender came out firing from the opening tip, draining a three-pointer and another jumper. Stonewall connected from deep and DePaul had a 10-9 lead by the first media timeout.
The faster start was something coach Doug Bruno has been emphasizing as his team had been in comeback mode for much of the season.
Campbell and Tanita Allen added threes of their own to give the Blue Demons a 16-13 lead. Led by Mary Gedaka's 12 points in the period, Villanova closed out the quarter with a 7-2 run to lead 20-18 after the first 10 minutes.
Dahlman opened the second quarter with a three-point play. With Campbell and Dahlman catching a breather on the sideline, Millender took over at the point. Her first play, she calmly dribbled up just behind the arc and connected on another jumper for a 23-22 lead.
Campbell's layup increased the lead until the Wildcats went on a 7-0 spurt to move in front 29-25 at halftime. Deliberate Villanova typically likes to use most of the shot clock on its possessions resulting in lower-scoring games.
DePaul was outscored 9-7 in the second quarter, its second-fewest points in a quarter this season. The Blue Demons scored six points in the first quarter against Syracuse.
Millender led her team with seven points at the break while Stonewall had six rebounds. Campbell had five points and four rebounds.
After the two-game weekend trip out east, DePaul returns home to face St. John's on Friday night. The 7 p.m. BIG EAST matchup at McGrath-Phillips Arena will be televised by NBC Sports Chicago Plus and also shown on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
