Stonewall Leads No. 24/24 DePaul Past St. John's

Junior forward scores game-high 22 points in 73-64 BIG EAST victory
CHICAGO  – Blue Demon fans entered McGrath-Phillips Arena Friday night wondering if No. 24/24 DePaul would have its comeback mettle tested once again.
Thanks to a strong performance by Chante Stonewall, no last-minute heroics were necessary in the Blue Demons' 73-64 BIG EAST win over St. John's.
Stonewall had a game-high 22 points while Ashton Millender and Kelly Campbell each scored a dozen apiece. Stonewall and Millender combined to go 8-for-12 from behind the arc. Rebekah Dahlman turned in a complete game with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Tanita Allen opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer off a nice feed from Campbell for a 54-48 home-team advantage. That turned into a 7-0 burst providing a little separation at 58-48.
St. John's (8-9, 1-5) had crept within five when Mart'e Grays scored five unanswered points in restoring a 10-point margin at 65-55 for DePaul (13-5, 4-2).
After the visitors cut their deficit to 65-60 with 1:44 showing on the clock, Stonewall, Dahlman (four) and Campbell converted eight-straight free throws.
Outscoring DePaul 9-3 at the outset of the third quarter gave the Red Storm its first lead of the game at 38-37. Dahlman opened the second half with a three only to have the visiting team score nine in a row.
St. John's led 40-37 when back-to-back threes from Sonya Morris and Millender put coach Doug Bruno's team back on top. Two-straight baskets gave St. John's a 44-43 lead.
It continued to go back and forth until the Blue Demons closed out the third quarter with consecutive scores from Stonewall and Dahlman for a 51-48 lead.
Millender hit her first two shots from beyond the arc as the Blue Demons shot out to a 9-3 lead after the opening tip. St. John's scored the next seven points to go ahead by one. That's when a Stonewall put-back a Dahlman free throw and a Stonewall three-pointer restored the home-team advantage.
That offensive burst evolved into a 9-0 DePaul run leading to a 19-10 advantage after one quarter. Stonewall had eight points and Millender six over the first 10 minutes.
A Stonewall three and a Campbell jumper provided their team with a 24-12 margin early in the second quarter. The Red Storm responded by scoring the next six points.
Stonewall's fourth connection from distance towards the end of the quarter lifted the Blue Demons to a 32-21 lead. St. John's scored the next eight points to draw within 32-29. Capping off a splendid first half,
Stonewall swished another jumper as her team went into the break leading by five.
The athletic junior from Downstate Normal already had 16 points in the first two quarters, shooting 6-of-11 from the floor including 4-of-6 from deep. Millender had nine points after knocking down all three of here shots from beyond the arc.
DePaul returns to McGrath-Phillips Arena Sunday to face Seton Hall in a BIG EAST showdown that tips at 2 p.m. and will be televised by NBC Sports Chicago Plus and also shown on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
