Stonewall's Torrid Shooting Leads DePaul Past Butler

Chante Stonewall scored 25 points in 86-78 BIG EAST triumph
INDIANAPOLIS  – Chante Stonewall was lights-out from three-point range on Friday night.
The athletic junior drained a career-high six from deep and tied a career-high with 25 points in DePaul's 86-78 victory over BIG EAST title contender Butler.
Stonewall was 6-of-7 from beyond the arc and 9-of-12 from the field overall. The nine field goals also tied a career high.
Ashton Millender supported that torrid shooting with 16 points and a career-high six assists. Mart'e Grays and Rebekah Dahlman added 12 points each.
Consecutive three-pointers by Stonewall, Millender and Kelly Campbell left DePaul (14-6, 5-3) within 75-70 at the fourth quarter media timeout. Yet another Stonewall three made it a two-point game.
Stonewall from deep again followed by a Tanita Allen basket gave DePaul a 78-75 lead. That was Stonewall's sixth connection from beyond the arc.
Grays converted a three-point play to put DePaul in front 81-76. A Butler breakaway made it a three-point game with 1:00 left. Dahlman buried a couple of clutch foul shots with :32 to go and the Blue Demons had a five-point advantage. Millender added a pair of foul shots and Grays hit one of her own.
Stonewall opened the third quarter with her third-straight three-pointer, and combined with a pair of Grays foul shots, DePaul led 46-40. The Bulldogs battled back and it was back and forth until consecutive Millender threes provided a 52-49 advantage at the media timeout.
Butler (16-3, 6-2) kept it close and a 14-2 run to close out the third quarter left DePaul trailing 67-56 going into the fourth quarter.
Turnovers continued to be a problem as the Blue Demons committed 19 in the first three quarters while forcing 17 on the Bulldogs.
In her first collegiate start, Maya Stovall scored DePaul's first basket on a nice driving layup. Stonewall followed up with a jumper and then a three-point play for a six-point lead after the opening tip.
Butler answered back with a 14-0 run to move in front 25-11 with two minutes to go in the opening quarter. Grays and Rebekah Dahlman hit back-to-back threes and it was 27-17 after one quarter.
Stonewall and Millender hit from deep as the Blue Demons made a surge early in the second quarter. Stovall's layup brought her team within 36-31 at the media timeout. She was having a good outing with her first starting assignment.
Stonewall's second three-pointer of the quarter sliced the deficit to two. Dee Bekelja's pair of free throws tied it 36-36 and Lexi Held followed with a long-distance connection for a 41-38 lead. The Blue Demons headed for their halftime locker room with a 41-40 lead.
Igniting the offense in the first half was Stonewall with 13 points and four rebounds. The junior forward was 5-of-7 from the floor and drained both of her three-point attempts.
Stovall was beginning to fill the stat sheet with four points, three assists and three steals. Campbell, Millender and Grays missed portion of the second quarter in foul trouble. DePaul was plagued by 13 turnovers, but forced an equal amount on Butler.
The Blue Demons return to BIG EAST action with a matchup Sunday at Xavier that will be televised by FS2.
