Second-round matchup tips at 7 p.m. at McGrath-Phillips Arena
CHICAGO – One game is a mere glimpse of what portends for a basketball team, but early indications are definitely pointing in the right direction for these Blue Demons.
As the defending BIG EAST champion prepares for its Preseason WNIT second-round game Monday night against Drexel, the latest edition in coach Doug Bruno's long lineage of success is chock full of promise.
For starters, partisan fans watching the 7 p.m. tipoff at McGrath-Phillips Arena will notice forward Chante Stonewall taking her versatile all-around game to another level with the kind of intensity and aggressiveness that can turn a game around.
That was never more evident than Stonewall's dominance of the backboards in No. 18/20 DePaul's 98-79 season-opening victory over Miami (Ohio) on Friday night. Her game-high 12 rebounds led her team to a 53-35 margin on the boards.
Rebounding and ball handling were the top priorities in her offseason plan, and the seven offensive rebounds Friday spoke to an elevated desire to pursue missed shots and turn them into baskets.
Along with the hustle points, the 6-foot, 1-inch senior went on the attack defensively resulting in a game-high five steals and other moments of disrupting the RedHawk flow.
Juxtaposing with Stonewall's brilliance was the emergence of sophomore guard Jolene Daninger whom Bruno has maintained for the last two years could one day become an impact player for his program.
What Daninger does as well as anyone on the team---and maybe the entire BIG EAST Conference as well---is put the ball in the basket. She is a superb sharpshooter from long distance who patiently waited for the self-confidence to develop and an opportunity to contribute.
Daninger had a career game in the Preseason WNIT opener setting personal bests with 14 points, four field goals and four rebounds. This from a 5-7 sophomore guard who had averaged less than five minutes a game before Friday and was on the court for 16:34 in her breakout performance.
Daninger gives the Blue Demons another legitimate perimeter threat to go along with Deja Church, Lexi Held, Sonya Morris, Kelly Campbell and Dee Bekelja. Such offensive balance will give opposing coaches pause to over-committing defensively against Stonewall.
All of the above along with explosive sophomore guard Maya Stovall and a talented freshman class provide Bruno with more depth than ever.
Drexel's Dragons are coming off a 74-63 victory over Davidson Saturday in their Preseason WNIT opener with all-purpose impact player Bailey Greenberg leading the way with 31 points including 5-of-9 shooting from three-point range. Keishana Washington added 18 points.
After going 24-9 last season and playing in the WNIT, the Dragons are 2-0 with a 66-62 road win at Quinnipiac. Greenberg has scored 62 points in her first two games, and the 5-11 forward also leads the team in rebounding, three-point percentage and free throw percentage.
