Senior scores 27 points Saturday in Maggie Dixon Classic championship game
CHICAGO – There's nothing quite like taking down a nationally ranked team in the championship game of the Maggie Dixon Classic.
From Jolene Daninger's exhilarating 40-foot halftime buzzer-beater to another MVP performance from Chante Stonewall, No. 19/20 DePaul came through big-time on Saturday with a pulsating 89-83 victory over No. 16/17 Miami.
Stonewall and fellow senior co-captain Kelly Campbell seemingly made every big play when the Blue Demons needed them the most. Stonewall led the team with 27 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Campbell chipped in 11 points, seven assists, four rebounds and four steals while also defending 6-foot, 4-inch Beatrice Mompremier.
Lexi Held drilled a quartet of three-pointers to finish with 16 points while Dee Bekelja had another solid outing with 11 points. Daninger scored nine points at critical junctures of the game.
Stonewall was honored as the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after scoring 40 points in two games. Campbell and Daninger were selected to the all-tournament team.
To offset Miami's strength inside, coach Doug Bruno had his team put the Hurricanes in a veritable 40-minute pressure cooker deploying a relentless press from baseline to baseline the entire game. It disrupted the Hurricane rhythm and forced 23 turnovers.
Scoring the first six points of the fourth quarter put the Blue Demons in front 72-60. Miami drew within seven when Daninger hit a deep corner three for a 10-point lead. Deja Church's three-pointer made it 78-67 before Miami made its final run.
Mompremier's basket down low brought her team within 80-77 with 3:25 left in the game and introduced a little tension to the McGrath-Phillips Arena partisan crowd. Leave it to Stonewall to respond with a clutch three-pointer and Campbell's six consecutive free throws down the stretch sealed DePaul's biggest win of the season.
It was a veritable three-for-all at the outset of the third quarter as DePaul quickly distanced itself from a 41-41 halftime tie. Held hit twice from long distance followed by Stonewall and Sonya Morris as a 14-5 run forced a Hurricane timeout trailing 55-46.
Whatever former Wheaton Central basketball star and current Miami coach Katie Meier said to her team worked as her players scored score six in a row to draw within three at the third quarter media timeout. The run was extended to 10-0 as Miami took a 56-55 lead.
Back came the Blue Demons closing out the third quarter with an 11-4 burst. Eight-straight points from Church, Bekelja and Stonewall gave Bruno's feisty team a 66-60 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes.
Right from the beginning, you knew this would be a memorable showdown on Sheffield. It was a hectic pace right from the opening tip as both teams looked to get out quickly and spread the floor. DePaul hit four of its first seven shots from three-point range to counter the inside scoring of 6-4 Mompremier who finished with 31 points and 18 rebounds.
Morris, Held, Stonewall and Bekelja cashed in from deep with Bekelja's providing a 14-13 lead at the first quarter media timeout.
DePaul's defensive intensity and in-your-face full-court pressure forced nine Miami turnovers in the first 10 minutes. Stonewall hit a pair of shots including a three and Bekelja's basket put the home team in front 21-20 going into the second quarter.
After back-to-back Mompremier baskets put the Hurricanes in front 25-23, a little "DePaulBall" led to a 6-0 run with Stonewall and Held connecting consecutively from deep.
The lead went back and forth with both teams hitting one big shot after another. Stonewall and Campbell hit jumpers for a 38-36 lead only to have Kelsey Marshall tie it. Moulayna Sidi Baba's three near the end of the first half put Miami up three.
Not to worry. Daninger knew just how to top off an action-packed first 20 minutes. The sophomore sharpshooter stole the ball while the Hurricanes were playing for the last shot, raced upcourt and unleashed a 40-footer that found nothing but net for a 41-41 halftime deadlock.
Stonewall had 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in the first 20 minutes. Held had eight points and Bekelja seven. Mompremier went into the locker room with 15 points and eight boards.
