Blue Demons continue best start in over 30 years with win at Minnesota on Friday
MINNEAPOLIS – DePaul improved to 8-0 with wire-to-wire win at Minnesota on Friday afternoon. Charlie Moore tallied his second straight double-double and Paul Reed nearly pulled off the first triple-double in program history.
Moore got the Blue Demons going early assisting a dunk by Jaylen Butz to start the scoring, two three-pointers and he assisted another three by Jalen Coleman-Lands that gave DePaul a 12-5 lead five-and-a-half minutes into the game.
DePaul (8-0) held the advantage for most of the opening half and built an 11-point lead late in the first half before Minnesota reeled off nine straight points to go into intermission with the Blue Demons holding a 35-33 lead.
The Blue Demons led for nearly 35 minutes and built a 10-point advantage with seven minutes left on back-to-back buckets by Darious Hall. Minnesota (3-4) had one last run and pulled to within two with 5:44 on the clock, but Moore scored four straight points to end the Gopher run.
Minnesota trailed by three with the ball in the final seconds, but Reed recorded his eighth blocked shot of the game and Hall hit two free throws for the 73-68 final.
Moore led the Blue Demons with 21 points, 12 assists and five steals while Reed totaled 11 points, nine rebounds and eight blocked shots. Coleman-Lands added 11 points that included a 3-of-5 effort from behind the arc while Butz (nine rebounds) and Romeo Weems (seven rebounds) each scored nine points.
Daniel Oturu led the Gophers with 19 points and 18 rebounds.
DePaul returns to Wintrust Arena on Wednesday night to face No. 12 Texas Tech in the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle. Start time at Wintrust Arena is 7:30 p.m. on FS1 and WIND (560 AM).
