11/3/2019 2:03:00 PM | WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
CHICAGO - The Blue Demons are now 11-13 (3-9 BIG EAST) after falling to Xavier in four sets 1-3 (22-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-19) Sunday afternoon.Â
FROM COACH ZIDEK
"Hats off to Hopkins who careered tonight going 20 of 30 in the kill category," said head coach Marie Zidek. "I thoght our middles did a great job matching their kill count and they are really starting to separate themselves as some of the top middles in the conference. We failed to dial in fast offense tonight and we were just a little too late when it mattered the most. That's a very different Xavier team than the first time around and they continue to be formidable foes for us. It was a fun battle and we had a lot of contributions from the team. Looking forward to getting back to practice this week."
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE » Xavier got on the board first and DePal quickly tied it up. Both teams fought back and forth until DePaul distanced itself on a 3-0 run featuring kills from Donna Brown and Elana Brueggemann to give the Blue Demons a 16-12 lead and bring the first Xavier timeout. Xavier came within one at 17-18 and knotted the sore at 22-22 before taking the first set 25-22.Â
SET TWO » Xavier jumped out to a 5-1 lead and maintained the advantage, eventually leading 20-15. DePaul went on a 3-0 run featuring a Bailey Nelson kill and Natalie Hayward service ace, bringing the difference to two and urging a Xavier timeout. Out of the stoppage, the score knotted at 22-22 and the Musketeers called another timeout. Xavier took the second set 25-22.Â
SET THREE » Brittany Maxwell threw down a kill to give DePaul the first point. The difference remained small until DePaul escaped into a 17-13 lead, bringing a Xavier timeout. The Musketeers knotted the score 19-19 and DePaul called a timeout. The Blue Demons went on to win the third set 25-23.Â
SET FOUR » It was once again a close battle, with the lead exchanging back and forth for a majority of the set. Xavier eventually went on a 3-0 run to lead 14-11, leading to a DePaul timeout. Out of the break, the Musketeers grew their lead and took the final set 25-19.
