Blue Demons Pull Away in Second Half for Win

Moore, Reed and Butz lead DePaul to third straight win
CHICAGO – Charlie Moore scored 27 points, Paul Reed posted a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double and Jaylen Butz scored 13 with six boards as DePaul won its third straight to open the 2019-20 season. The Blue Demons used a 14-2 run to pull away from Fairleigh Dickinson in a 70-59 win at Wintrust Arena.
DePaul (3-0) shot .444 (24-54) from the field and held its third straight opponent under 60 points. The Blue Demons forced 21 turnovers for 19 points off turnovers.
A slow opening five minutes started things Friday night as six minutes into the action, Jalen Coleman-Lands and Moore hit back-to-back threes, giving the host a 10-9 lead.
The two teams went back and forth over much of the first half, with neither side leading by more than two points over the opening eight and a half minutes. With 11:37 on the clock, Butz laid home two points to give DePaul a 16-14 advantage.
Down the stretch of the first half, DePaul clamped down defensively on the Knights, holding the visitors to 2-of-12 shooting to go into the break leading by as score of 34-28.
Out of the break, Fairleigh Dickinson (1-1) went on a 11-1 run, taking a 39-35 lead less than three minutes into the second half. However, DePaul had an answer and with 14:30 to play in the game, the Blue Demons took the lead back at 40-39.
The teams continued to go back and forth until the midway points as Moore went up and under with a nifty layup to kick start a 14-2 run that turned a one-point deficit into a 61-52 advantage. Moore scored 10 of the 14 points and assisted another two as he knocked down two three-pointers, a layup and a jump shot.
The DePaul lead extended to a dozen as Reed got an offensive rebound and went back up with jump hook. In the closing minutes, the Knights would not get closer than 11 before settling on the 70-59 final.
Jahlil Jenkins led the Knights with 17 points while Kaleb Bishop and Elyjah Williams chipped in 12 points apiece.
After playing three games in four days, DePaul takes short break before traveling to Iowa for a 7 p.m. start on Monday. The game can be seen on FS1 while WYLL (1160 AM ) will be the home of the action on the radio.
