Blue Demons start quickly and never look back in fourth straight win
IOWA CITY, Iowa – It was all DePaul from the start as the Blue Demons opened the evening with 13 straight points and never looked back in a 93-78 win at Iowa on Monday. DePaul led by as many as 25 points as the Blue Demons claimed the first victory for the BIG EAST over the Big Ten in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.
All five starters scored in the first three minutes as DePaul led 13-0. Paul Reed and Romeo Weems opened the scoring with back-to-back three-pointers before Jaylen Butz scored on a baby hook in the paint, Charlie Moore drove and scored on a layup and Jalen Coleman-Lands knocked down the first of his four three-pointers.
Coleman-Lands led the attack in the first half as he scored 14 points with four three-pointers. A driving layup by Markese Jacobs gave the Blue Demons their first 20-point advantage of the night with 8:29 left in the first half.
DePaul (4-0) took a 53-30 advantage into halftime and primarily held at least 20-point lead until the final moments of the game.
Reed turned in his best performance of the young season with 25 points and 12 rebounds. The junior went 10-for-14 from the field including a 3-of-4 night from behind the arc. Coleman-Lands finished with 17 points, five assists and two steals and Devin Gage came off the bench with 13 points, four assists and three steals.
As a team, DePaul finished the game shooting .614 (35-57) from the field and .550 (11-20) from three-point range.
Iowa (1-1) was led by 16 points from CJ Fredrick and 14 points and eight rebounds by Luka Garza.
The Blue Demons return to Wintrust Arena on Saturday to host Cornell. Start time is Noon on FOX Sports Networks and WSCR (670 AM). Locally in Chicago, the game can be seen on The U.
