On the road Saturday against a team coming off upset of nationally ranked Syracuse
CHICAGO – Winning on the road can be a daunting pursuit as No. 16/15 DePaul heads into part two of its three-game odyssey away from Lincoln Park on Saturday.
If the Green Bay encounter Saturday at the Kress Center tipping at 1 p.m. is anything like the first road test, buckle up and hang on for quite a ride. The game can be seen on ESPN3.
Last Sunday, the Blue Demons (6-1) kept their fans in suspense the full 40 minutes before coming away with an edge-of-your-seat 70-68 victory at Northwestern.
It could be more of the same in a city where quarterback Aaron Rogers is a household name. Like Northwestern, Green Bay (5-3) comes into the game receiving votes in the USA Today/Coaches poll.
The Phoenix are also coming off its best performance of the early season upsetting then-No. 18/16 Syracuse 79-73 in overtime last Saturday at the Victoria (B.C.) Invitational.
Coach Doug Bruno's team will be the third consecutive nationally ranked opponent for Green Bay that lost 83-58 to then-No. 10/8 Mississippi State in British Columbia.
DePaul trailed NU in the final four minutes until a heads-up defensive play by Chante Stonewall led to Sonya Morris' jumper for a 69-68 lead with 43 seconds left. Stonewall added a free throw with two seconds to go.
Stonewall & Co. will be looking to extend their winning streak to five with an offense averaging 88.3 points a game---fourth best in the nation.
The unselfish Blue Demons lead the country in assists per game, are second in three-pointers and threes per game and third in total assists and three-point attempts.
Stonewall, recognized as one of the top 20 small forwards in the nation, leads her team averaging 18.4 points a game. She is also tops in field goal percentage (.505) and steals at nearly four per game. Her 6.3 rebounds a game is second to point guard Kelly Campbell's 6.6.
Campbell leads the nation in assist-turnover ratio, is No. 9 in assists per game and No. 11 in total assists. Stonewall is ninth in NCAA Division I in steals, No. 12 in steals per game and No. 20 in field goals.
Stepping up in their sophomore season are Morris (16.4 points a game) and Lexi Held at nearly 13 points per game. Juniors Deja Church and Dee Bekelja, sophomore Jolene Daninger and freshmen Keke Rimmer and Kayla Caudle have also made significant contributions.
DePaul's defensive pressure is forcing opponents to commit more than 23 turnovers a game, and the Blue Demon defense will keep a close eye on 6-foot junior Caitlyn Hibner who finished with 30 points, nine rebounds and five assists against Syracuse.
The Phoenix are led by Frankie Wurtz who tops her team in scoring at 15.4 points a game and rebounding at 6.3. She is also Green Bay's most dangerous deep threat converting on 20-of-51 attempts from three-point range.
Hibner is averaging 14.5 points a game and is tied for second in rebounding with 6-1 Karly Murphy (10.4 points a game).
