No. 10 Golden Eagles knock off Blue Demons in 125th meeting
CHICAGO - Femi Olujobi and Max Strus led DePaul with 19 and 16 points, but the Blue Demons never recovered from a late first half Marquette run as the Golden Eagles led by double digits for all of the second half to topple DePaul, 92-73, Tuesday night at Wintrust Arena.
No. 10/10 Marquette (21-4, 10-2 BIG EAST) came out of the gates scorching hot from behind the three point line as the Golden Eagles converted on four of their first five attempts to force a DePaul (13-10, 5-7 BIG EAST) time out with the score 13-4.
However, out the timeout it was DePaul quickly flipping the script, as the Blue Demons found their stroke from behind the arc with three Olujobi long balls to move within three at 20-17. Over the next four minutes, the two teams played largely even and with 10 minutes left in the opening half the score was 31-26 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
After a rapid-fire opening 10 minutes, the pace slowed down for both teams as the half progressed and with 3:44 remaining to go until intermission, Marquette's lead remained at five at 39-34. It was Olujobi largely leading the way for DePaul over the first fifteen minutes as the senior big man's 15 points was a game high for both teams at that point in the action.
Marquette closed the first half with a 12-5 run to go into the break leading the Blue Demons, 51-39.
DePaul attempted to close the gap over the second half, but trailed 76-63 with just under eight minute left in the game. A three-point play for Devin Gage pulled the Blue Demons to within 12 at 80-68 with five minutes on the clock, but Marquette answered and sealed the win by extending the lead to 20 points late in the contest.
Olujobi finished with 19 points and Strus scored 16 with five rebounds while Gage totaled 10 points and four assists. Paul Reed pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with nine points while Lyrik Shreiner scored nine with four rebound and two assists off the bench.
Marquette's Markus Howard led all scorers with 36 points while Sam Hauser added 17 points.
The Blue Demons return to action on Saturday as DePaul travels to Butler for an 8 p.m. ET tip with the Bulldogs. Thee game can be seen on FS1 and head on WSCR (670 AM) in Chicago.
