Strus scores 25, Reed tallies 16-point, 12-rebound double-double
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A run in each half by Georgetown was too much to overcome for DePaul in an 82-73 loss Wednesday night. Max Strus led the Blue Demons with 25 points while Paul Reed put together a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds.
The two sides traded baskets early before Georgetown used a six-point flurry to force a DePaul time out with 11:35 left in the first half. The Hoyas led 20-13 at the break and DePaul ended the brief run on a Jaylen Butz putback.
Butz's bucket sparked a DePaul run that pulled the Blue Demons to within two points before Georgetown pulled away again with eight straight points and led, 37-27, with just over four minutes on the clock.
The half ended with a three-pointer for Georgetown just before the buzzer and the Hoyas took a 49-34 lead at intermission.
Georgetown (17-11, 7-8 BIG EAST) built its lead to 17 points early in the second half, but DePaul closed the deficit to single digits as Eli Cain hit three straight three-pointers. His third three of the run induced a Georgetown time out with the score at 69-60 with 7:30 left in the game.
A three-point play by Devin Gage trimmed the deficit to seven points with just under a minute left, but that would be as close as the Blue Demons would get as the Hoyas held off DePaul (13-13, 5-10 BIG EAST) for an 82-73 final.
Strus went 10-of-15 from the field with three assists and two blocked shot while Reed added three, two blocks and a steal to his double-double. Cain finished with 14 points and three steals while Butz grabbed 10 boards to go with six points.
Jesse Govan led the Hoyas with 26 points while Mac McClung added 15 points.
The Blue Demons host St. John's on Sunday in their next game. Start time with the Red Storm is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Wintrust Arena.
