Blue Demons Drop BIG EAST Tournament Opener to St. John's

DePaul's bid to defeat St. John's for third time comes up short by score of 82-74
NEW YORK – Looking to knock off St. John's for the third time this season, DePaul came up short in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament on Wednesday night. Eli Cain scored 23 points and Devin Gage added a career-high 19 to lead the Blue Demons.
Similar to 10 days ago at Wintrust Arena, St John's jumped out to a 10-point lead and held a 16-6 advantage seven minutes into the game. On Wednesday night, St. John's was able to hold the lead despite runs by DePaul to cut the deficit.
Eli Cain scored eight straight points to pull DePaul within four at 16-12 before the Blue Demons moved to within a point at 18-17. St. John's then scored five straight points and took a 39-35 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, St. John's reclaimed a double-digit lead with a three-pointer by LJ Figueroa to give the Red Storm a 53-42 lead with 14:18 left in the game.
DePaul (15-15) moved to within eight points on back-to-back buckets from Gage and Paul Reed before St. John's scored the next nine points to take a 74-57 lead at the six-minute mark.
The lead for the Red Storm would grow as high as 17 points before the final score settled at 82-74.
Cain added five rebounds to his game-high 23 points while Gage grabbed five boards with two assists. Max Strus scored 14 points and Jaylen Butz grabbed 14 rebounds for DePaul.
St. John's (21-11) was led by 18 points each from Shamorie Ponds, Justin Simon and Mustapha Heron.
