Blue Demons Defeat Longwood to Advance to CBI Semifinals

Max Strus scores 38 points and Paul Reed adds 23-point, 12-rebound double-double
CHICAGO – DePaul walked out of McGrath-Phillips Arena with their second win of the Roman College Basketball Invitational as the Blue Demons knocked off Longwood, 97-89, in the quarterfinals. With the win, the Blue Demons host Coastal Carolina in a semifinal game Wednesday at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Max Strus scored a game-high 38 points en route to his fourth straight game with 30-plus points. The senior set the record for most points in a single game in McGrath-Phillips Arena breaking the previous mark of 27 by Eli Cain against UIC in December 2016.
Paul Reed secured his eighth double-double, scoring a career-high 23 points and adding 12 rebounds. Jaylen Butz finished with 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
DePaul (17-15) went on a 12-0 run that saw back-to-back triples from Strus and Reed to take a 26-15 lead halfway through the opening 20 minutes.
DePaul maintained a steady 10-point advantage outscoring Longwood, 24-20 off the glass, and despite the Lancers' late first-half attempt to close in, the Blue Demons went into the locker room with a 47-36 lead.
Strus opened up the second half with a baseline dunk followed by a three from the right wing to increase DePaul's lead to 13.
Longwood would crawl back to tie the game with 4:58 remaining off a three-pointer from Damarion Geter but the Blue Demons wouldn't give way. They outscored the Lancers 18-10 in the final five minutes of the game and secure their spot in the semifinals.
Shabooty Phillips led the Lancers with 18 points while Juan Munoz chipped in 15 points.
DePaul will keep it rolling on Wednesday night in the semifinals of the CBI against Coastal Carolina at 7:00 p.m. at McGrath-Phillips Arena. The Chanticleers defeated West Virginia, 109-91, in Morgantown earlier Monday night. Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. CT on Tuesday morning at the DePaul ticket office, online or by phone.
